Athletics Outlast Mariners in Slugfest, 6-4 Victory at T-Mobile

The Oakland Athletics proved once again why mid-April baseball can be deceptively brutal, grinding out a 6-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday at T-Mobile Park. This wasn’t pretty. This wasn’t a showcase of defensive excellence or masterful pitching. This was a slugfest where the A’s simply made better decisions in crucial moments and caught the Mariners pitching staff looking confused and overwhelmed.

Let’s be honest: Casey Legumina got absolutely torched in the opening inning. He lasted 1.0 innings and surrendered 3 runs on just 1 hit and 1 walk. That’s incompetence wrapped in a box with a bow. The Athletics didn’t waste time taking advantage, and Hogan Harris steadied the ship with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. When Joel Kuhnel came in for the save, he was clinical and efficient, which is all you can ask in a high-leverage situation.

Condensed Game: ATH@SEA – 4/20/26

The Mariners made a game of it early, though. Cal Raleigh crushed a three-run shot in the bottom of the first that made it clear this would be a back-and-forth affair. Dominic Canzone added his own solo blast in the second inning to keep Seattle within striking distance at 3-2. That’s the kind of response that normally wins ballgames.

But here’s where the Athletics separates themselves from mediocre teams: they answered back with precision. Carlos Cortes went 4-for-5 and launched a solo homer in the fourth inning. The real dagger came in the sixth when Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers went back-to-back, both connecting on fly balls for solo shots. That’s two-run inning on the board, and suddenly Oakland led 5-3. Langeliers, who finished with a homer and an RBI despite limited production at the plate, proved his clutch credentials in a game that demanded them.

The Eighth Inning Decided Everything

The eighth inning is where this game got decided. Max Muncy’s sacrifice fly scored Tyler Soderstrom, then Lawrence Butler delivered the knockout with a two-run single that pushed the Athletics’ lead to 6-3. This wasn’t luck. This was execution. When the Mariners needed their pitchers to navigate trouble, they folded.

Seattle showed some fight in the bottom of the ninth when Leo Rivas doubled to score Cole Young, making it 6-4. But it was too little, too late, and Lawrence Butler closed the deal with a catchable flyout.

What This Means

This victory is significant because it shows the Athletics have something that many teams lack: resilience. They didn’t panic when Cal Raleigh went yard early. They didn’t fold when the Mariners crawled back into the game. They simply played better baseball when it mattered most. Josh Naylor was spectacular for Seattle with 3 hits, and Cortes put on a masterclass for Oakland at the plate. But individual performances don’t always translate to wins, and that’s exactly what happened here.

The Mariners will be kicking themselves for this one. A home game with early momentum is gold in baseball, and they squandered it. The Athletics, meanwhile, proved that championships are built on these kinds of wins, not the blowouts everyone remembers.
