Then Mason Miller came in for the ninth and absolutely dealt, striking out two more Angels while allowing just one hit and one walk. This is the formula that wins in October, and the Padres are executing it flawlessly in April.

The Angels managed just one run, courtesy of Nolan Schanuel‘s eighth-inning single that plated Logan O’Hoppe. It felt like a consolation prize. Mike Trout, the best player on the field, was limited to his defensive contributions, which were stellar but ultimately insufficient against a Padres squad that knew when to strike.

Tatis and Laureano Deliver When It Matters

Fernando Tatis Jr. continues to justify the massive contract and massive expectations. Two RBI singles, one a soft grounder to right field and the other a line drive that pierced the Angels’ defense. Tatis isn’t trying to hit home runs anymore, which is refreshing. He’s trying to get hits, and he’s succeeding. That’s maturity we haven’t always seen from the talented but temperamental star.

Ramón Laureano deserves equal billing. His RBI single in the eighth got the Padres rolling, and then his sacrifice fly in the ninth provided insurance. This wasn’t a flashy performance from Laureano, but it was a professional one. He did his job. Both men did their jobs.

Jackson Merrill’s leaping catch in center field was the exclamation point. A spectacular grab that could have been a rally-starter for the Angels instead became a momentum-killer. This young outfielder plays like he’s got something to prove every single day, and Saturday was no exception.

The Padres are now in a position where they can win games like this routinely. They have starting pitching, they have a bullpen, they have a lineup with multiple threats. The Angels, meanwhile, are left wondering how they let this one slip away at home. That’s the difference between a contending team and one that’s just playing out the string. Saturday in Anaheim proved it beyond question.
