Abrams Leads Early Barrage as Nationals Edge Pirates in Tuesday Thriller
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – CJ Abrams reminded everyone why the Washington Nationals are building around him on Tuesday night, going 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs to lead the Nationals to a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. It was vintage Abrams, aggressive at the plate and relentless in his approach, making Mitch Keller‘s night a living nightmare from the opening pitch.

Nationals Strike Fast and Often
The Nationals didn’t wait for pleasantries. They came out swinging in the first inning like a team that remembered the Pirates’ pitching staff from last season. Brady House singled to center, Luis García Jr. scampered home. Daylen Lile followed with another line drive single, and just like that, García Jr. was crossing the plate for run number two. Abrams then delivered his own single, and House waltzed home to make it 3-0 before most fans had settled into their seats. It was a masterclass in first-inning execution, and it set the tone for everything that followed.
Keller looked rattled, walking four batters in just four innings and allowing six hits. The Pirates’ ace simply couldn’t locate his fastball, and when he did, the Nationals were ready. Abrams would add a solo homer in the third inning, his sixth of the season, extending Washington’s lead to 4-1. The kid’s swinging the bat like he’s got something to prove.
Mitchell Parker was equally impressive for the Nationals, spinning 2.0 scoreless innings with five strikeouts on just two hits. The bullpen depth Washington has assembled is becoming a legitimate weapon, and it showed here. Gus Varland came in for the save situation and delivered, allowing just one hit while fanning a batter.
Pirates Fight Back, But Too Little, Too Late
To their credit, the Pirates didn’t roll over. Brandon Lowe belted a solo shot in the first, one of the few bright spots in Pittsburgh’s lineup. Joey Bart added his first home run of 2026 in the fifth to keep things interesting. Marcell Ozuna, the latest Pirates experiment, drove in a run with a sharp double, and Nick Gonzales added an RBI groundout as well. The Pirates scored four runs and had their chances, but they came in spurts rather than clusters, and that’s the difference between winning and losing games like this.
The problem was simple: Keller couldn’t eat innings, and once the Nationals jumped ahead 5-1 in the fourth inning, Pittsburgh’s comeback felt perpetually one run short. They scored four runs but needed one more, and baseball doesn’t deal in moral victories. Jake Mangum’s defense provided some highlight-reel moments, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit.
This was a game about execution meeting opportunity, and on this Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, Washington executed better. The Nationals’ young core, particularly Abrams and the rest of their dynamic lineup, is starting to look dangerous. If they can maintain this kind of consistency, the NL East is going to be watching over its shoulder all season.
