Bogaerts Powers Padres Past Mariners in Petco Park Pitching Duel

The San Diego Padres showed why they’re built to win in October on Tuesday night at Petco Park, grinding out a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners in a game that was far closer than the final score suggests. This wasn’t a blowout. This was a pitcher’s duel that got decided by one inning of execution, and the Padres simply made their pitches count when it mattered most.

Michael King was absolutely brilliant in this one. Six innings, four hits, one run, five strikeouts. That’s the kind of performance that wins playoff games, and the Padres’ ace was operating at peak efficiency throughout the night. King didn’t overwhelm anyone with velocity or break, but he was painting corners and changing speeds like a craftsman. The Mariners’ hitters looked lost at times, and you could see the frustration mounting in their dugout as King worked deeper into counts.

Bryan Woo pitched his tail off for Seattle, surrendering only three earned runs over seven innings with eight hits and three strikeouts. In a vacuum, that’s a quality start. But in this game, it was a loss, and that’s what stings. One bad inning killed the Mariners.

The Third Inning Changed Everything

Seattle struck first in the second when Dominic Canzone lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Randy Arozarena. The Mariners had their chance to take control of this game. Then came the bottom of the third, and Fernando Tatis Jr. went to work with a single that scored Ramón Laureano. No big deal at that moment, just evening the score at 1-1.

But then Xander Bogaerts stepped up and delivered a line drive single that absolutely changed the complexion of this game. Two runs scored on that hit, and suddenly the Padres had a 3-1 lead they would never relinquish. That’s baseball at its finest: one swing can alter everything. Bogaerts went 3-for-4 with three RBIs on the night, proving once again why this Padres lineup has legitimate teeth.

Jackson Merrill was outstanding in center field and at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 and making some spectacular defensive plays look routine. This kid is the real deal, and the Padres have to be thrilled with what they’re seeing.

The Mariners had chances throughout the game, but they couldn’t capitalize. That’s the difference between good teams and great ones, and on Tuesday night, San Diego was the better team when it counted.

Mason Miller came in for the eighth and absolutely locked down the door, extending his scoreless streak to 29 2/3 innings. That’s not a relief appearance, that’s a masterclass. One inning, no hits, one strikeout, perfect stuff.

The Mariners left some opportunities on the table and will rue this one, but give credit where it’s due. The Padres executed better when it mattered, and that’s why they won. Seattle’s still got 156 games to play, so dwelling on this one doesn’t make sense. But if you’re in the Pacific Northwest, you have to be frustrated that your team couldn’t cash in when the moment presented itself.
