Rockies Demolish Astros 9-1 Behind Lorenzen’s Gem

The Colorado Rockies didn’t just beat the Houston Astros on Wednesday at Coors Field. They humiliated them. A 9-1 victory that felt less like a baseball game and more like a public execution, one that will haunt the Astros’ pitching staff for weeks. This wasn’t a competitive affair. This was a clinic in how to capitalize on early mistakes, and frankly, it was beautiful to watch if you happened to be wearing purple.

Let’s start with the elephant in the room: AJ Blubaugh lasted exactly one inning. ONE INNING. The man faced 10 batters, allowed 4 hits and 5 runs while walking 3. That’s not a pitching line, that’s a cry for help. When your starter gets yanked before the second inning even starts, you’ve already surrendered the game. The Astros’ front office should be asking some serious questions about how this guy made it to the mound on the mound on a Wednesday night in April.

Rockies erupt for five runs in the 2nd inning

The Rockies’ second-inning explosion was the turning point, though really it was the entire game in microcosm. Tyler Freeman singled home Edouard Julien to get things started. Then Julien himself doubled down with a two-run single that brought home Troy Johnston and Kyle Karros. Mickey Moniak added a sacrifice fly. Ezequiel Tovar capped it off with an RBI double. Five runs on the board before the top of the second even arrived. That’s not a rally. That’s a rout in progress.

Edouard Julien's two-run single

Michael Lorenzen, on the other hand, looked like a legitimate major league pitcher. Five and two-thirds innings, 7 hits, just 1 run earned, 4 strikeouts. He wasn’t pristine, but he was efficient. He did what you need a starter to do in these situations: keep the game out of reach and let your bullpen take a nap. Zach Agnos closed things out with 3 and a third innings of scoreless relief, allowing just 1 hit. That’s pitching.

Hunter Goodman provided the exclamation point with a solo home run in the fourth, his second of the season. The man is swinging with confidence, and when you’re playing on the road against a demoralized opponent, that’s when you strike. Colorado did exactly that, adding an insurance run in the sixth on a TJ Rumfield sacrifice fly, then another in the eighth via Troy Johnston’s line drive single.

Astros’ Pitching Collapse is Inexcusable

Brice Matthews did manage an RBI single for Houston in the second inning, scoring Isaac Paredes. But one run is an afterthought in a game like this. The Astros needed their starting pitcher to eat innings and limit damage. Instead, Blubaugh imploded faster than a house of cards in a hurricane. This is the kind of performance that gets you demoted, if not worse.

Rockies Show Coors Field Magic is Real

Colorado showed on Wednesday why Coors Field remains one of the most challenging environments in baseball for visiting teams. The altitude, the conditions, the crowd energy, it all compounded Houston’s misery. The Rockies didn’t need anything fancy. They just needed adequate pitching and their bats to wake up early. They got both, and they got it decisively.

Rockies fans celebrate sweep of Astros

This game will be forgotten by June, but for one night, the Rockies reminded everyone that on their home field, with the wind at their backs and their opponents reeling, they can be absolutely devastating. The Astros, meanwhile, need to have a long talk with their pitching coach about what exactly is happening in spring training.
