Skenes Dominates as Pirates Rout Padres, 7-1, Behind Eighth-Inning Explosion

There’s nothing quite like watching a young ace find his rhythm on the mound, and Paul Skenes delivered exactly that on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. The Pirates’ right-hander was absolutely surgical against a San Diego Padres offense that came to PNC Park looking for answers but left with nothing but questions and a brutal 7-1 defeat.

Skenes went 6.1 innings, scattering just two hits while striking out six and walking only two. That’s the kind of performance that reminds you why the baseball world has been buzzing about this kid since he was drafted. He didn’t overpower hitters with 100-mph fastballs every pitch; he was smarter than that. He was clinical. He was precise. He was everything a Padres offense couldn’t handle on this particular Tuesday evening.

On the flip side, Nick Pivetta deserved better. The Padres’ starter actually pitched decently through five innings, allowing just four hits and two runs while punching out eight batters. But in baseball, decent doesn’t cut it when your opponent is dealing like Skenes was. The Padres managed only one run across nine innings, and Xander Bogaerts‘ solo homer in the seventh felt more like a consolation prize than anything resembling a competitive effort.

The Eighth-Inning Carnage

But here’s where this game got ugly for San Diego. The Pirates’ bats, which had been relatively quiet through seven innings, decided to turn the eighth inning into an absolute bloodbath. Five runs crossed the plate, and suddenly a tight 2-1 ballgame became a blowout. Nick Gonzales, Jake Mangum, and Konnor Griffin all got their licks in, each recording hits that drove in crucial runs. Griffin’s two-run single alone was the backbreaker, turning a close game into something resembling a mercy rule violation.

This is the danger of playing small-ball baseball against a pitching staff that can’t locate their fastballs when it matters most. The Padres had opportunities, sure. But they wasted them. Freddy Fermin’s error behind the plate in the fifth didn’t help matters, and neither did their overall inability to string together quality at-bats once Skenes found his groove.

A Tale of Two Teams

What we witnessed on Tuesday was a masterclass in contrast. One team executed flawlessly when it mattered. The other looked like they showed up expecting the game to be played on their schedule. Oneil Cruz’s two-run double in the fifth set the early tone for Pittsburgh, and from that point forward, the Pirates simply outplayed their division rival in every facet that mattered.

The Padres will want to forget this one quickly and move on, but not before asking themselves some hard questions about their offensive approach against elite arms. Skenes isn’t the first young pitcher they’ll face this season, and he won’t be the last. If this is the template for how San Diego plans to attack quality starting pitching, it’s going to be a long April.
