Cubs Dismantle Rays Behind Assad’s Gem, Ballesteros’ Power

The Chicago Cubs rolled into Tampa Bay on Tuesday night and reminded the Rays exactly why they’re not getting anybody’s attention this early in April. With Javier Assad masterfully silencing a listless Rays offense and the Cubs’ lineup taking turns punishing Mason Englert, Chicago waltzed out of Tropicana Field with a decisive 9-2 victory that felt less like a baseball game and more like a clinic.

Assad was nothing short of spectacular, tossing 5.2 innings of one-hit, shutout baseball with a pedestrian walk and three strikeouts. Yes, you read that right. One hit in five and two-thirds innings. The kid looked untouchable, working efficiently and keeping the Rays perpetually off balance. This wasn’t a flashy performance full of 98-mile-per-hour fastballs and swing-and-miss stuff. This was a pro’s masterclass in pitching: location, sequencing, and an almost contemptuous lack of concern for anything Tampa Bay wanted to accomplish.

Meanwhile, Englert couldn’t get out of the fourth inning, serving up seven hits and three earned runs across 3.2 forgettable frames. The Rays’ starting pitcher looked like he was throwing batting practice, and frankly, the Cubs batters treated his offerings accordingly.

Cubs Pile On Early, Finish Strong

The offensive fireworks started in the second inning when Michael Conforto laced a sharp single that scored Dansby Swanson, followed immediately by Matt Shaw doubling to drive in Conforto. By the third, Pete Crow-Armstrong had already crossed the plate on a Moises Ballesteros sacrifice fly. The Cubs were cooking early, establishing command of the game before most people had finished their first inning nachos.

But the real gut punch came in the ninth inning when Ballesteros, who finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, launched a two-run homer to right field that essentially put the game completely out of reach. Crow-Armstrong, who’d already contributed a solo shot of his own in the seventh, scored on the play, and suddenly it was 9-2. Game over. No drama. No tension.

Crow-Armstrong deserves recognition too. The kid went 3-for-5 with a homer and multiple scoring opportunities. He looked like a player who belongs in the big leagues, not someone wondering if he’s getting enough rope.

Rays Whimper, Not Roar

Tampa Bay managed to scrape together two runs in the eighth inning, both courtesy of some competent but utterly meaningless offensive contributions. Jonathan Aranda‘s double and Ryan Vilade’s infield single accounted for the Rays’ sole offensive highlights. But by that point, the game had already been decided in every way that mattered.

Kevin Cash’s squad looked lifeless and uninspired, exactly the kind of performance that concerns front offices in mid-April. The Rays aren’t going to win championships if they can’t muster more than token resistance against a Cubs team that, while solid, isn’t exactly the Yankees or Dodgers.

Chicago’s balanced attack, superior pitching depth, and clear hunger for wins made the difference on Tuesday night. The Cubs looked like a team that knows where it’s going. The Rays looked like they’re still trying to figure out the clubhouse.
