The Astros came into this one as division favorites, but their ace looked vulnerable, scattered, and frankly, unprepared for what Los Angeles threw at him. For a team with World Series aspirations, that’s the kind of performance that haunts you come October.

Lowe Sets the Tone Early

Josh Lowe absolutely crushed a pitch in the second inning, a fly ball to left center that landed with authority and brought both Yoán Moncada and Jo Adell across the plate. Three runs, just like that. It was the kind of early gut-punch that sets the tone for an entire ballgame, and Houston never really recovered. Lowe finished 2-for-4 with that three-run dinger. That’s efficiency. That’s professional at-bats.

Mike Trout, as is his custom, reminded everyone why he’s still one of the most feared hitters in baseball. A line drive home run in the fifth inning to left field. One swing, one run, but more importantly, one emphatic statement. Trout went 3-for-4 on the night. We’ve become so accustomed to his excellence that it’s easy to take it for granted, but make no mistake, he’s the backbone of everything the Angels do offensively.

Zeferjahn Shuts the Door

Here’s where the Angels showed they’re not just a one-trick pony at the plate. Ryan Zeferjahn came in and threw two scoreless innings of relief, allowing zero hits and striking out two. That’s the kind of bullpen depth that wins ball games. The Astros managed just one run, courtesy of Yordan Alvarez‘s solo shot in the fifth, but that was essentially garbage time at that point.

Zach Neto put the final nail in the coffin with a ninth-inning home run, his first of the season. By that point, the game was academic, but it demonstrated that this Angels team has multiple threats up and down the lineup. This wasn’t a one-man show. This was a disciplined, hungry offensive attack.

Look, it’s March. We all know that spring training results come with an asterisk. But there’s something to be said for teams that show up ready to play, execute pitches, and don’t beat themselves. The Angels did all three on Friday night. The Astros? They looked sloppy, overconfident, and caught off guard.

If I’m an Astros fan, I’m not panicking yet. But I’m definitely making a mental note that this Angels squad has teeth. In the American West, that’s something to fear.
