DeLauter Homers Twice as Guardians Top Mariners in Seattle

There’s nothing quite like a young player announcing himself on the biggest stage, and Chase DeLauter did exactly that Thursday at T-Mobile Park. The Cleveland Guardians outfielder hammered two home runs, including a go-ahead blast in the ninth inning, to lift his team past the Seattle Mariners 6-4 in what turned out to be a slugfest masquerading as an Opening Day statement.

DeLauter’s performance was the kind of thing that makes baseball beautiful and infuriating in equal measure. He went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, serving as the primary architect of a Guardians offense that refused to quit even when the Mariners threatened to seize control early.

The Mariners came out swinging themselves. Brendan Donovan and Dominic Canzone each connected early, with Canzone belting an absolute moon shot that traveled 444 feet and represented everything the home team hoped to accomplish. For a moment, Seattle looked poised to run away with this thing. The problem with baseball, though, is that no lead feels safe when you’re facing a team with professional hitters.

José Ramírez Delivers the Dagger

The turning point came in the seventh inning when José Ramírez ripped a two-run double down the line that put Cleveland ahead 5-3. This wasn’t just any double. This was the kind of hit that separates contenders from pretenders, a sharp line drive to left field that seemed to say everything about the Guardians’ quality at the plate.

Brayan Rocchio contributed his own two-run double in the fifth, and Rhys Hoskins made an impressive debut with the Guardians, going 3-for-3 at the plate. That kind of at-bat production is how you build wins in March, even if the calendar suggests games don’t matter yet. They do when you’re establishing identity and momentum heading into the season.

Relievers Close Out Ugly Pitching Performance

Now, let’s be honest about what we saw on the mound. Gabe Speier lasted exactly one inning for Seattle, and Connor Brogdon‘s save situation work lasted a full frame for Cleveland. This wasn’t exactly Cy Young material from either side. The Guardians rode their bullpen to victory, with Cade Smith recording a crisp ninth inning to slam the door shut.

DeLauter’s final bomb, a two-run shot in the ninth, gave Cleveland insurance runs they desperately needed. In a game that featured four home runs total from Seattle and three from Cleveland, the difference came down to who could string together quality at-bats and avoid the big mistakes. The Guardians did both better when it mattered most.

Canzone was tremendous for the Mariners, launching two homers himself, but it proved insufficient against a Guardians lineup that simply refused to go away quietly. This was Opening Day theater at its finest, two teams establishing early credibility and establishing who they are. Cleveland showed they have the horses to compete. Seattle showed they can hit the ball a long way. The difference Thursday was execution and a young superstar making his mark.

In baseball, that’s usually enough to win ballgames.
