Pérez Dominates in Complete Game as Marlins Shutout Braves
Sometimes you witness a pitching performance so clean, so utterly dominant, that you’re left wondering how a team could possibly manufacture more than three runs. On Friday night at loanDepot park, Eury Pérez answered that question by making sure the Marlins didn’t need to. The Miami hurler absolutely dismantled the Atlanta Braves with a complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit while striking out eight in a 3-0 victory that left the Atlanta offense completely baffled and, frankly, embarrassed.
Pitching Decisions
Star Performers
This wasn’t some fortunate rain-delayed affair where a pitcher stumbles into a shutout. Pérez earned every single out, working nine full innings with surgical precision. He scattered three walks but never lost control of the strike zone when it mattered, operating with the kind of confidence that separates good pitchers from great ones. The Braves managed all of one hit, a Sean Murphy single that might as well have been a punch line given how thoroughly Pérez was in command.
Marlins’ Bats Finally Wake Up
While Pérez was putting on a masterclass, the Marlins were doing what they needed to do: scratch out enough runs to win. Joe Mack started the fireworks in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run off Atlanta starter Grant Holmes, sending a fly ball to right-center that traveled 428 feet and immediately shifted the momentum entirely Miami’s way.
If that blast was the lightning strike, the eighth inning was the follow-up punch. Heriberto Hernández ripped a sharp line drive to center fielder Michael Harris II that brought home Jakob Marsee, and then Griffin Conine put the exclamation point on the evening with his own solo home run, a fly ball to left-center that made it 3-0. Conine finished 3-for-3 with two hits and an RBI, the kind of efficient night that makes opposing pitchers lose sleep.
Holmes Implodes, Braves Suffer Embarrassment
Grant Holmes couldn’t even complete five innings, allowing one hit and one run while walking three. For a team supposedly contending, this is the kind of listless performance that should trigger serious internal conversations. The Braves came into this game riding on certain expectations, and what they delivered was a complete dud against a Marlins team that frankly isn’t in their stratosphere talent-wise.
What makes this loss particularly stinging isn’t just the shutout itself, it’s how thoroughly Miami’s defense supported Pérez. There were diving plays, a double play, and sharp positioning that turned hard contact into quick outs. Michael Harris II made a running catch in center, and Jared Serna flashed the leather with a diving play that exemplified Miami’s focus and execution.
The Braves had every opportunity to be competitive here, but instead they rolled over without much of a fight. In baseball, you can’t control when a pitcher is in a zone, but you absolutely can control your approach and intensity at the plate. Atlanta failed to do either on Friday night. Pérez will get plenty of recognition for his complete game, and rightfully so, but this loss belongs to the Braves’ lineup for simply not showing up when it mattered.
