Yankees Edge Orioles Behind Volpe’s Two-Run Double
The New York Yankees did what they needed to do on Friday night at Yankee Stadium, grinding out a 6-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in a game that featured solid pitching, timely hitting, and just enough defensive miscues to swing momentum. This wasn’t pretty baseball. This was winning baseball, which in late September is all that matters.

Volpe Takes Over When It Matters Most
Anthony Volpe was the difference-maker in the sixth inning, delivering a two-run double down the right-field line that proved to be the game’s pivotal moment. With Luis García Jr. already in scoring position and Spencer Jones on second, Volpe’s extra-base hit gave the Yankees a 5-1 cushion that Baltimore could never fully recover from. It was the kind of clutch at-bat that defines seasons, and Volpe answered the bell when the pressure was highest.
The Yankees’ lineup did its job in spurts throughout the evening, with Ryan McMahon’s fifth-inning RBI double getting things rolling early and Spencer Jones’ RBI single in the sixth inning building on that momentum. Heliot Ramos chipped in an RBI single in the seventh, and Luis García Jr. followed suit, turning a Orioles pitching collapse into a comfortable lead.
Will Warren’s short but electric appearance cannot be overlooked. The young Yankees arm struck out seven batters over 3.2 innings while allowing just three hits and no earned runs. That’s the kind of dominant relief performance that wins playoff games, assuming these Yankees can claw their way back into contention down the stretch. Warren looked unhittable, and the Orioles simply had no answers for his stuff.
Orioles Fight Back Too Little, Too Late
Baltimore wasn’t without its bright spots. Brandon Young pitched a respectable five innings, surrendering just one earned run on two hits while striking out six. That’s a quality start in most games, but on this night it wasn’t enough because the Yankees’ bullpen was simply superior. Young got into some trouble with three walks, and in a low-scoring affair, those base runners can prove costly.
The Orioles did manage to scratch back late. Dylan Beavers cranked a solo homer in the ninth inning, his ninth of the season, and Leody Taveras followed with an RBI double that scored Pete Alonso and brought Coby Mayo to third. Mayo had an excellent night at the plate, going 3 for 4, showing some of the young talent Baltimore is trying to build around. But it was all window dressing on a loss that won’t haunt the Orioles’ season, though on a night where pitching dominated, they simply couldn’t generate enough offense when it counted.
The Yankees won this game by doing the fundamentals well, getting their relief pitchers into a groove early, and taking advantage of an Orioles pitching staff that wilted under pressure. It’s not flashy, and it’s not always entertaining, but with the calendar flipping toward October, this is exactly the kind of win the Bronx Bombers need to build confidence.
