Pirates Edge Royals in Thrilling Slugfest Behind Flores’ Go-Ahead Blast

Sometimes baseball rewards the team that simply refuses to quit, and on Sunday at PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates proved they’ve got enough fight in them to earn a September victory when it matters most. Kansas City came to town expecting to push their playoff hopes, but instead watched a 3-2 lead evaporate in the eighth inning when Rafael Flores Jr. crushed a two-run homer off the Royals’ bullpen to seal a 4-3 Pirates triumph. It wasn’t the prettiest game ever played, but it was effective baseball at crunch time.

Let’s start with what went wrong for Kansas City, because that’s the story here. Nate Pearson, presumably brought in for relief work, lasted just two-thirds of an inning and surrendered three hits and two earned runs. That’s not going to cut it when you’re trying to protect a lead, and that brutal outing essentially cost the Royals this game. Manager Matt Quatraro has questions to answer about that decision, and Pearson has work to do in the offseason if he wants to remain part of the rotation picture.

But credit Pittsburgh’s pitching staff for keeping this game within reach. Carmen Mlodzinski was solid through three innings of work, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out a batter. More importantly, Mason Montgomery came through in the ninth with a clean inning of relief to lock down the save. These are the kinds of performances that separate contenders from pretenders down the stretch.

Flores Delivers When Pirates Need Him Most

Condensed Game: KC@PIT – 9/20/26

Rafael Flores Jr. was the hero on this Sunday, and it wasn’t even close. The Pirates catcher went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, driving in both of the go-ahead runs in the eighth inning. After Spencer Horwitz had knotted things up at 3-3 with an RBI single in the sixth, the game was truly anybody’s to win. Flores made sure it would be Pittsburgh’s game with one swing.

Vinnie Pasquantino two-run homer (14)

The Royals tried to fight back through their usual means: Salvador Perez’s early single scoring Bobby Witt Jr., and a two-run blast from Vinnie Pasquantino in the seventh that briefly put Kansas City ahead. But those efforts weren’t enough against a Pirates team that had Oneil Cruz cranking a solo shot in the fourth and O’Neil Cruz continuing to prove he’s a force in the middle of the Pirates’ order.

Missed Opportunity for Kansas City

Here’s the brutal truth for Royals fans: this was a winnable game that got away. You can’t blame hitters when Salvador Perez and Pasquantino both drive in runs, including a two-run shot that should have put the game away. But when your relief pitcher can’t throw strikes and your bullpen implodes in crunch time, you’re going to lose more games than you win. That’s baseball, and it’s why Pittsburgh, for all its flaws this season, stole one that Kansas City absolutely should have walked away with.

Oneil Cruz's solo homer (20)

The Pirates now head into the final stretch with momentum, while the Royals have to wonder what might have been if Pearson had simply done his job. That’s the baseball season in a nutshell, folks. Execution matters, and on Sunday in Pittsburgh, the Pirates executed when it mattered.
