Astros Go Yard Five Times to Cruise Past Royals

The Houston Astros reminded everyone on Thursday night at Daikin Park why they remain one of baseball’s most formidable offensive forces. With a display of raw power that was equal parts impressive and downright insulting to the Kansas City Royals‘ pitching staff, the Astros cranked five home runs in a 6-2 victory that was never remotely competitive after the opening inning.

Let’s be clear: this was a slugfest masquerading as a baseball game. The Royals came to Houston expecting a tight contest. Instead, they got an eviction notice delivered via a succession of balls disappearing over the wall. Jeremy Peña led the charge with a leadoff bomb in the bottom of the first, setting the tone immediately. The Royals never recovered, and honestly, there’s no shame in that when you’re facing this kind of onslaught.

Daulton Varsho added his own blast in the second inning, and suddenly Seth Lugo was already pitching from a 2-0 hole before most fans finished their first beer. The Royals managed to scratch out a single run in the eighth inning, but it felt like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. This game was decided by the fifth inning when LaMonte Wade Jr. and a red-hot Yordan Alvarez went back-to-back for solo shots.

Alvarez Reaches 40, Makes Statement

Alvarez’s 40th home run of the season is no afterthought statistic. This is a man in the middle of an MVP-caliber campaign, and Thursday night he looked every bit the part. The Astros continue to construct an offense that simply cannot be pitched to effectively when everyone is locked in like this. Alvarez, Peña, and company are making legitimate runs at 100 RBIs before October even arrives.

Astros hit FIVE homers in 6-2 win

Taylor Trammell capped the display with his own solo shot in the eighth, adding insult to injury. Five different Astros went deep. Five. The Royals had no answer, no counter-punch, no moment of resistance that mattered.

Lugo Takes the Fall, But Bullpen Steps Up

Seth Lugo took the loss, and while his line of 5.0 innings, 8 hits, and 4 earned runs doesn’t scream disaster, context matters. He was simply outgunned. You cannot expect a starting pitcher to navigate through a lineup this aggressive when the opposing pitching is sharp. Bryan King earned the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, but this was hardly a save situation. Josh Hader finished it cleanly, but by then the game had long since been decided by the lumber show happening in the Astros’ batting order.

LaMonte Wade Jr.'s solo home run (4)

The Royals showed some signs of life with a run in the eighth when Carter Jensen singled home John Rave, but it was cosmetic. Peña’s late single in the eighth had already put the game further out of reach. This wasn’t a contest. This was target practice with a major league roster on the other end of the barrel.

Carter Jensen's RBI single

The Astros are firing on all cylinders heading into the final stretch of September. If they maintain this kind of offensive firepower, playoff opponents should be very, very concerned. The Royals, meanwhile, head home to regroup and remember what it felt like when their own bats were hot. Thursday night belonged entirely to Houston.
