Padres Outlast Giants in Slugfest, Take Wild 7-6 Victory at Oracle

The San Diego Padres came to Oracle Park on Saturday and reminded the Giants exactly why they’re the more complete ballclub right now. In a game that devolved into a home run derby by the eighth inning, the Padres’ superior pitching depth and clutch hitting proved the difference in a 7-6 victory that felt far more decisive than the final score suggests.

King’s Dominance Carries the Day

Michael King's seven strong innings in win vs. Giants

Michael King was absolutely sensational for the Padres, spinning seven innings of five-hit ball while allowing just three runs and walking nobody. That’s the kind of performance that wins tight ballgames in September, and it’s the kind of pitching the Giants simply couldn’t match. Cesar Perdomo lasted just 4.2 innings for San Francisco, getting tagged for five runs on ten hits while issuing two walks. When you’re getting outpitched that badly at home, you’re already fighting an uphill battle.

The Giants struck first, as Rafael Devers belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the first to give San Francisco an early 2-0 lead. But the Padres didn’t blink. They immediately answered with Dustin Harris‘s two-run single in the second, then added a Jackson Merrill home run in the third that put them up 3-2.

Tatis Takes Over Late

By the sixth inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. had seen enough of the Giants’ pitching staff. The superstar rifled a solo homer into left field to extend the Padres’ lead to 6-3, and that’s when you knew this game was San Diego’s to lose. Sure, the Giants got two more runs in the eighth on a couple of homers, but the Padres had already put enough runs on the board to survive the late fireworks.

Drew Gilbert's two-run home run (9)

What’s most impressive about this victory is that the Padres didn’t need a slugfest to win it. They played smart baseball, manufactured runs when they needed to (see Jake Cronenworth’s nifty bunt single in the fifth), and leaned on their superior pitching. Mason Miller came in for the save and made quick work of the Giants in the ninth, striking out two in a perfect inning.

Xander Bogaerts was phenomenal at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a pair of those hits coming in crucial situations. Harris drove in three runs across multiple hits. These are the performances that separate good teams from great ones in the stretch run. The Padres are starting to look like a team that knows how to win baseball games when it matters.

The Giants, meanwhile, showed plenty of fight. Drew Gilbert‘s two-run homer and Drew Cavanaugh‘s first career blast made things interesting late. But ultimately, they couldn’t generate enough consistent offense to overcome their pitching woes. This is becoming a pattern for San Francisco on Saturday afternoons, and frankly, it’s getting old.

The Padres leave Oracle Park with a crucial division win and momentum heading into the final weeks of the season. The Giants head back to their clubhouse knowing they had chances and squandered them. In baseball, that’s often the difference between September and October.
