Giants’ Power Show Overwhelms Mets in Citi Field Slugfest

The San Francisco Giants came to Citi Field on Saturday and reminded the New York Mets why you don’t let opposing offenses get comfortable. The Giants bludgeoned their way to a 9-5 victory with a display of power that was as impressive as it was demoralizing for Mets fans. Six home runs will do that. This wasn’t just a win, it was a statement: the Giants’ lineup is built to punish mistakes, and Zac Thornton and company provided plenty of them.

A Masterclass in Offensive Firepower

Rafael Devers hits his second homer of the day! (35)

Rafael Devers set the tone early with a first-inning solo shot, then returned in the fifth to go deep again, this time with Jonah Cox aboard. That’s four RBIs in one night for the talented slugger. But Devers wasn’t even the night’s most prolific long-ball hitter. That honor belonged to Christian Koss, who delivered his first career multihomer game with a pair of moon shots, including a two-run blast in the third that proved to be a turning point.

Christian Koss' first career multihomer game

Koss’ emergence as a power threat is exactly what the Giants needed. With three RBIs on the night, he showed he belongs in this lineup during critical moments. Osleivis Basabe chipped in a two-run shot in the eighth, and Grant McCray added a solo homer in the ninth for good measure. When your fifth, sixth, and seventh hitters are launching baseballs into the stratosphere, you’re going to win plenty of ballgames.

Anthony Molina strikes out six in solid outing

Thornton’s Rough Outing Doomed the Mets

Zac Thornton’s inability to escape the fifth inning sealed the Mets’ fate. Six earned runs allowed across five innings is simply unacceptable against a team as talented as the Giants. The Mets’ pitching staff handed the visiting team a blueprint for destruction, and San Francisco’s hitters happily obliged. Anthony Molina, meanwhile, was economical and effective for the Giants, striking out six while allowing just one hit in five innings of work. That’s the kind of mismatch that decides games in September.

Devers, Koss each homer twice in 9-5 win over Mets

A.J. Ewing provided New York’s only bright spot offensively, launching a two-run homer in the second that briefly suggested the Mets might hang around. Brett Baty added three RBIs with an RBI walk and a two-run double, showing some fight down the stretch. But it was too little, too late. By the time Baty’s double cleared the left field grass in the ninth, the Giants’ running clock had already crossed the finish line.

Brett Baty's two-run double

This was a game that got out of hand quickly, and while the Mets manufactured some late-inning offense, they never threatened to truly close the gap. That’s what happens when you give a hungry team like San Francisco early leads and let their power hitters feast on mediocre pitching. The Giants’ depth in the middle of their lineup was simply too much to overcome, and the Mets’ pitching depth couldn’t match it.

Saturday’s loss stings because it felt preventable. Better command from Thornton, sharper execution in the field, and maybe the Mets find themselves in a different situation. Instead, they got run-ruled in all but name by a Giants team that understood one fundamental truth: in baseball, when you get your chance, you take it. The Giants took theirs with both hands and six home runs.
