Twins Silence O’s: Royce Lewis Powers Minnesota Past Baltimore
The Minnesota Twins came to Camden Yards on Saturday and did what good road teams do: they executed when it mattered and refused to beat themselves. A 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles was a clinic in efficiency, featuring dominant pitching, timely hitting, and a bullpen that slammed the door when the moment demanded it.
Pitching Decisions
Star Performers
Royce Lewis was the star of this show, and frankly, it wasn’t even close. The Twins infielder went deep in the fifth inning, a fly ball to left that scored Trevor Larnach and gave Minnesota a 2-1 lead they would never relinquish. Lewis finished 1-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBIs, proving once again that he’s capable of carrying a lineup when the pressure is on. This was his first home run of the season, and the timing couldn’t have been better against a Bradish who looked anything but sharp.
Kyle Bradish simply didn’t have it for Baltimore. The righthander lasted just 4.2 innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 runs while walking three batters. That’s not a formula for success in any league, let alone against a Minnesota team that’s clearly on a mission this early in the season. Bradish’s inability to find the zone was the story of his afternoon, and it cost the Orioles any chance at building momentum heading into the rest of March.
Twins’ Pitching Dominates from the Jump
The real eye-opener here was Minnesota’s pitching performance. Taj Bradley, the presumed workhorse, must have been phenomenal based on the highlights, and the back end of the bullpen was untouchable. Anthony Banda came in and threw 0.2 innings of scoreless ball with a walk and two strikeouts, setting the stage for Cole Sands to lock things down.
Sands was perfect in his save situation, tossing 1.0 inning with no hits, no runs, and two strikeouts. That’s the kind of bullpen performance that wins games on the road, especially in early season matchups where one team is still finding its rhythm and the other is hitting on all cylinders.
Baltimore’s Lone Moment of Glory
The Orioles got one run in the second when Jeremiah Jackson singled on a ground ball to left, scoring Colton Cowser. It was a bright spot in an otherwise forgettable afternoon at the ballpark. Baltimore had chances, including bases-loaded situations that Eric Orze somehow escaped, but they couldn’t capitalize when the moment called for it.
Josh Bell added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Kody Clemens singled sharply to center in the seventh to extend the lead to 4-1. These weren’t flashy moments, but they represented everything the Twins got right on Saturday: they took what the pitcher gave them and moved runners into scoring position.
This was the kind of victory that separates good teams from good-looking teams. The Twins didn’t need to hit home runs every at-bat or throw perfect games. They simply played smarter, more opportunistic baseball than Baltimore, and they got the result. If Minnesota can sustain this level of pitching and execution, the American League is going to have its hands full with this squad all season long.
