Riley Greene, Dingler Lead Tigers Past Rockies

The Detroit Tigers reminded everyone Friday night why they belong in playoff conversations, cruising past the Colorado Rockies 6-2 at Comerica Park in a game that was decided by superior execution and timely hitting. This wasn’t a nail-biter. This was a statement.

Valdez Takes Command

Framber Valdez was absolutely masterful on the mound for Detroit, tossing six scoreless innings while scattering six hits and just two walks. The man was in complete control, striking out two and never allowing the Rockies to mount any real offensive threat until the damage was already done. Mark Manfredi, meanwhile, lasted all of 0.2 innings for Colorado, surrendering two runs on one hit before getting yanked. That’s the kind of pitching disparity that decides September games, and frankly, it wasn’t even close.

Kenley Jansen came in for the save, needing just 0.1 innings and one strikeout to secure it. The Tigers’ bullpen did exactly what was asked of them, which is refreshingly rare in this era of baseball.

The Middle Innings Tell the Story

The real damage came in the fifth and sixth innings when Detroit’s lineup finally woke up. Max Clark started the party with a solo blast to right field in the fifth, his third home run of the season. It was a solo shot, sure, but it set the tone for what was coming.

The sixth inning is where Colorado’s pitching fell completely apart. Riley Greene smoked a triple down the line in left, scoring Gleyber Torres to make it 2-0. Then Dillon Dingler, who’s been swinging it hot down the stretch, crushed a two-run homer to left field that made it 4-0. Just like that, the game was over. The Rockies never recovered.

Greene wasn’t finished either. He added an RBI double in the eighth inning that scored Spencer Torkelson, continuing a night where the Tigers’ designated hitter simply refused to make an out. Greene finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and looked like he was playing a different sport than everyone else on the field.

Colorado’s Futile Attempt

To the Rockies’ credit, they didn’t fold completely. Jake McCarthy was stellar at the plate, going 3-for-5 with solid contact throughout the night. The problem is that stellar individual performances don’t matter when your pitching gets shredded and you can’t string together any consistent offense. Zac Veen managed an RBI single in the ninth inning that scored Adael Amador, but by then it was nothing more than a mercy consolation.

This game represented the difference between a team ready for October baseball and one that’s still searching for its identity. The Tigers executed their game plan flawlessly, while Colorado looked confused at the plate and disorganized in the dugout. On Friday night at Comerica Park, there was only one team ready to play meaningful baseball, and it wasn’t close.
