But here’s where the Padres’ pitching depth showed up. Mason Miller recorded the save with a clean inning of work, striking out two while allowing just one hit. When you can’t manufacture runs against a bullpen with that kind of stuff, you don’t win ballgames, plain and simple.

Fernando Tatis Jr. went 3-for-4 without driving in a run, a reminder that sometimes the best hitters still need a little help. But that’s what makes teams like the Padres dangerous. They can win without everyone putting up gaudy offensive numbers. Pivetta’s arm, Merrill’s bat, Miller’s closer mentality, and the fundamental soundness of it all combined to produce this victory.

For Washington, this loss stings because it felt winnable.
