Orioles outlast Athletics in 10-inning thriller at Sutter Health Park

The Baltimore Orioles scraped together just enough offense to survive a Friday night slugfest against the Oakland Athletics, winning 4-3 in 10 innings at Sutter Health Park. This wasn’t a clinic in pitching excellence or defensive wizardry. This was a gut-check battle where both teams clawed and scratched their way through 10 frames, and ultimately, the Orioles simply refused to lose when it mattered most.

A Tale of Two Closers

Let’s be clear: this game shouldn’t have gone to the 10th. Brady Basso inherited a mess in the 10th inning and imploded spectacularly, allowing two runs on just two hits and a walk while striking out two. Basso’s 1.0 IP, 1 ER line tells the whole story. The Athletics had chances. Jonah Heim, their most consistent threat all night, had belted a solo bomb in the bottom of the 7th to keep Oakland alive. But when you rely on a backup reliever to close out a tight game in extras, you’re playing with fire.

By contrast, Andrew Kittredge came in and shut the door cleanly, tossing a scoreless frame with two strikeouts. Alex Hoppe then sealed the deal with a 1.0 IP save, allowing one hit but zero runs. The Orioles’ bullpen execution was superior when it absolutely had to be.

The 10th Inning Massacre

Coby Mayo drove in the go-ahead run with a line drive single in the top of the 10th, sending Carlos Narvaez across the plate. Then Christian Encarnacion-Strand added immediate insurance with his own RBI single, scoring Gunnar Henderson to push the lead to 4-2. The Orioles weren’t interested in letting this slip away.

The Athletics answered back in their half of the frame. Zack Gelof’s line drive single scored Alika Williams, pulling Oakland within one at 4-3. But it was too little, too late. The damage was already done.

Earlier, Lawrence Butler had kept Oakland alive with a crucial line drive single in the 8th that scored Henry Bolte and tied the game at 3-3. Butler was a bright spot for Oakland all night, but even his efforts couldn’t overcome the late-game collapse by the bullpen.

Early Scripting and Grit

Dylan Beavers got Baltimore on the board in the 2nd inning with an RBI single that scored Coby Mayo, staking the Orioles to an early 1-0 lead. Both teams’ starters, Brandon Young for Baltimore and Jacob Lopez for Oakland, put together respectable outings. Young threw seven strong innings, and Lopez struck out six over five frames. Both pitchers deserved better than the bullpen roulette that followed.

This was a frustrating loss for the Athletics. Oakland had every opportunity to close this out and failed when it mattered. The bullpen betrayed the efforts of Heim and Butler, who carried the weight of the offense on their shoulders. Meanwhile, the Orioles showed the resilience and late-game execution that separates contenders from pretenders. In a tight division race, these are the games you simply cannot afford to lose.
