Wacha’s 10-K Masterclass Silences Guardians in Shutout Victory

Michael Wacha reminded everyone on Friday night why the Kansas City Royals brought him here to be their ace. Tanner Bibee’s Gutsy Effort Falls Short

Tanner Bibee deserves credit for keeping the Guardians in the game longer than Wacha’s stuff suggested they had any right to be. The Cleveland righthander pitched six innings, surrendering just one earned run on seven hits while striking out five. That’s a respectable outing in a vacuum, and under different circumstances, it might have been enough to earn a quality start. But Friday night wasn’t about quality starts. It was about which pitcher was sharper, and Bibee simply wasn’t in Wacha’s zip code.

The Guardians had their moments. They escaped a bases-loaded jam in the middle innings that could have ballooned the deficit. They put runners in scoring position at various junctures. But time and again, Wacha’s fastball and devastating breaking stuff simply put hitters away. The guy was unhittable, and when you’re facing that kind of stuff, you’re not going to push runs across the plate consistently enough to win ballgames.

A Shutout Built on Dominance

Steven Cruz came on in the ninth to slam the door, pitching a clean inning with two strikeouts to secure the shutout. That’s what great pitching staffs do on the road. They don’t give the opposition anything to work with. The Royals didn’t allow the Guardians a single run across nine innings, and that’s a recipe for victory in baseball, regardless of how many runs you score.

This was a complete performance by Kansas City against a Cleveland team that came into Friday still in the thick of the playoff chase. The Royals proved they can win in multiple ways, but when they’re getting starts like this from Wacha, they’re nearly impossible to beat. The Guardians will need to shake this one off quickly, but there’s no shame in getting outdueled when you’re facing that caliber of pitching. Wacha was simply phenomenal.
