Connor Wong’s three-run bomb was virtually meaningless in the grand scheme of things, a consolation prize in what became a lopsided affair. Yes, it was a gorgeous stroke. Yes, it showed the Red Sox still had a pulse. But it couldn’t overcome the disaster that was the third inning. Wong finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, yet it still wasn’t remotely enough.

Boston looked utterly unprepared at the plate for most of this game, and Sandoval’s early exit guaranteed they’d never catch up. The Pirates dictated terms from the opening inning when Bryan Reynolds doubled in Esmerlyn Valdez, and they never looked back. This was Pirates baseball at its finest: fundamentally sound, patient, and utterly unforgiving of mistakes.

On Sunday, Pittsburgh showed Boston exactly why it doesn’t pay to overlook any opponent in this league. The Red Sox will want this one back quickly.
