Tigers Edge Guardians Behind McGonigle’s Clutch Hitting

The Detroit Tigers scraped together just enough offense to survive a late Cleveland Guardians rally, winning 6-4 on Tuesday night at Comerica Park in a game that showcased defensive excellence and situational baseball from both sides. This wasn’t pretty. This wasn’t dominant. But for the Tigers, a win is a win, and they’ll take it.

Kevin McGonigle was the star of the show for Detroit, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and proving once again that consistent gap-to-gap hitting wins close ballgames. His two-run double in the fifth inning was the decisive blow, giving the Tigers a 4-1 cushion that they’d desperately need later. McGonigle did what the Tigers needed: he didn’t try to do too much, just put the barrel on the ball and let his teammates run the bases.

Spencer Torkelson got things rolling early with an RBI double in the second inning, and Gleyber Torres added another run-scoring single in that same frame. The Tigers weren’t explosive, but they were efficient. That’s a recipe for winning baseball in August when both teams are beat up and tired.

Bibee’s Struggles Hand Tigers the Edge

Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee was mediocre at best, surrendering five earned runs across 6.1 innings with just four strikeouts against two walks. For a pitcher who should be a cornerstone of the Guardians’ rotation, that’s simply not going to cut it in a tight AL Central race. Bibee had runners on base in multiple innings and couldn’t pitch out of trouble. The Tigers capitalized, and rightfully so.

Chase DeLauter provided the offensive spark for Cleveland, smacking a solo home run in the third inning to put the Guardians on the board. Jo Adell added a long ball of his own in the eighth inning and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth, keeping the Guardians dangerously close down the stretch. Both players showed power, but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome the early deficit.

Jansen Escapes Late Scare

Here’s where it got interesting. Kenley Jansen came in for the save situation in the ninth, and the veteran closer looked shaky. He walked two batters with only one inning to work but induced a crucial groundout to escape unscathed. For a closer of Jansen’s pedigree, you expect that kind of execution in high-leverage moments, but it doesn’t mean it’s not stressful to watch.

The Guardians left everything on the field in the ninth, scratching and clawing for another run, but they couldn’t quite get over the hump. Steven Kwan scored twice and José Ramírez drove in a run, showing that the Cleveland lineup has teeth. The problem is they showed up too late, and Tanner Bibee’s subpar outing meant they were always chasing.

This game won’t make the highlight reels. Jacob Waguespack threw just two scoreless innings of relief for Detroit, but that’s all the Tigers needed from their bullpen. Both teams made plays, both teams showed flashes of competence, but only one team made the right plays at the right time. That was Detroit on Tuesday night, and sometimes that’s all that matters in a pennant race. The Tigers proved they can win close games with timely hitting and a bullpen that gets the job done. The Guardians learned a painful lesson about getting off to a hot start.
