Mets Walk Off in 10th as Bichette Delivers Clutch Hit in Cleveland

Sometimes baseball rewards the team that simply refuses to quit. The New York Mets proved that on Wednesday night at Progressive Field, scratching and clawing their way to a 6-5 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in 10 innings. It was the kind of win that shifts momentum, the kind that gets written into a clubhouse’s DNA when September rolls around and games matter most.

The Mets struck first with some early thunder. Brett Baty launched a solo shot to left-center in the third, followed immediately by Jorge Polanco‘s homer to right, giving New York a quick 2-0 advantage. The Guardians looked vulnerable, their pitching staff on its heels. But Cleveland is built tougher than that, and they clawed back with characteristic grit. Nathaniel Lowe’s two-run single in the fifth tied the game, and suddenly what looked like a Mets runaway had turned into a genuine battle.

Carson Benge kept New York alive with a solo home run in the sixth, his 13th of the season, but the Guardians answered right back. This game had the feel of one where both teams refused to blink, each counter-punch met with another counter-punch. The pitching matchups deteriorated as the night wore on, with both bullpens getting plenty of work. Tanner Bibee was exceptional for Cleveland, striking out 10 batters including his 600th career K, but even that wasn’t enough to carry the Guardians home.

The real story, though, was Cleveland’s night collapsing in extra innings. After eight innings of tense baseball, the Mets loaded the bases in the 10th, setting the stage for Bo Bichette. Facing the Guardians’ worn-down bullpen, Bichette delivered a sharp single to right field. Francisco Lindor scored easily from third, and while Bichette was thrown out stretching for second, the damage was done. One run was all the Mets needed.

Bullpen Brilliance Seals the Deal

Chayce McDermott pitched exactly two innings of critical relief for the Mets, scattering zero hits while punching out two. He kept the Guardians off the board when it mattered most, preventing Cleveland from taking a lead they might have held. Daniel Duarte then slammed the door with a perfect tenth, allowing the Mets to celebrate in enemy territory.

This was a game that could have gone either way. Angel Genao‘s remarkable debut performance for Cleveland, going 4-for-5, showed the Guardians have talent bubbling beneath the surface. Travis Bazzana also contributed meaningfully with his RBI single. But individual performances don’t matter when the final score reads the other way.

Mets Survive Extra Baseball

The Mets are the kind of team that bends but doesn’t break. They trailed, they fought back, they went to extra innings on the road, and they found a way to win when it counted most. That’s championship-level baseball, and it’s exactly why you never count them out. Bichette’s moment in the tenth symbolized everything the Mets did right: stay in the fight, stay aggressive, and when your moment comes, capitalize.

For the Guardians, this loss stings. They had multiple chances to put the Mets away and couldn’t. In baseball, that’s often the difference between October and staying home. Stephen Vogt’s club showed flashes of brilliance but came up just short when they needed to finish. That’s a lesson they’ll carry with them going forward.
