Stowers’ Sting in the First

Kyle Stowers didn’t need much. The young Marlins outfielder got his fastball in the bottom of the first inning and punished it, sending a fly ball to right center for a solo home run. That was it. That was the ballgame. One swing, one moment of inattention or bad fortune for Nola, and the Marlins had all the insurance they’d ever need.

What makes this result particularly galling for the Phillies is that they had opportunities. Bryce Harper singled in the sixth. Alec Bohm was moving around the bases. But this Marlins defense was dialed in, making the sensational look routine and the routine look like a highlight reel.

Pen Tightens the Screws

Pete Fairbanks came in for the ninth and treated it like a formality, striking out two batters in a clean save. The Marlins had total control from the first pitch, and by the time the ninth inning arrived, this game felt decided before it was even played.
