Yankees Power Past Phillies Behind Wells, Domínguez Home Runs

The New York Yankees showed up to Citizens Bank Park on Saturday with their bats loaded and their pitching arm ready, decisively defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 in a game that exposed the home team’s offensive anemia and rewarded New York’s measured approach to run production.

This wasn’t some high-octane slugfest. This was professional baseball at its finest, which is to say it was often frustratingly patient. The Phillies scratched out their lone run in the bottom of the first when Bryce Harper’s sacrifice fly pushed Trea Turner across to give Philadelphia early momentum. That appeared to be a sign of things to come. It wasn’t. Not even close.

Austin Wells' solo home run (7)

Austin Wells responded with a seventh home run of the season in the third inning, a solo shot that tied the game and announced that the Yankees weren’t going to be bullied by a Phillies team that looked lifeless at the plate for the better part of seven innings. Wells was magnificent all night, reminding everyone why this kid has real juice in his swing. When you’re catching, hitting homers, and keeping the pitcher’s morale intact, you’re doing something right.

Jasson Domínguez's solo home run (6)

The Yankees tacked on two more runs, with Cody Bellinger delivering an RBI single in the sixth before Jasson Domínguez crushed his sixth home run of the season to left field in the seventh. Domínguez has been a revelation this year, and Saturday was another example of why the Yankees’ youth movement on the offensive end is starting to look legitimate. The kid can flat-out hit.

Weathers Was Masterful When It Mattered

Ryan Weathers' seven strikeouts vs. Phillies

Ryan Weathers didn’t need a whole lot of run support, but he certainly appreciated the cushion his teammates built. Working 5.2 innings, Weathers struck out seven batters and scattered six hits while allowing just one earned run. This is the kind of performance that wins games in July. It’s not flashy. It’s not a complete game. But in the modern era of baseball, when managers use relief pitchers like they’re trading cards, Weathers did exactly what the Yankees needed him to do. He got deep enough into the game to protect the bullpen and gave New York a chance to win.

Phillies Couldn’t Find Their Offense

Don Mattingly on offensive struggles, more in loss

Kyle Backhus was a disaster for Philadelphia, lasting only 0.2 innings before being yanked. The Phillies’ pitching staff after that point kept the game competitive, but it didn’t matter. The offensive philosophy on display was limp and uninspired. Harper’s sacrifice fly was nice, but one run is simply not going to cut it against a Yankees team that’s hitting the ball with authority. Don Mattingly’s club looked overmatched on Saturday, which is concerning when you’re supposed to be a contender.

Wells and Domínguez hit home runs in Yankees' win

David Bednar came in for the save and closed it out cleanly, and that was that. The Yankees picked up a crucial road victory, proving they can win games without needing to resort to fireworks. Sometimes baseball is about making pitches, hitting your spots, and capitalizing on mistakes. The Yankees did all three on Saturday. The Phillies did none of it.
