Pirates Outlast Yankees in 10-Inning Thriller at Yankee Stadium

The Pittsburgh Pirates showed up to Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night with a simple message: we’re not going quietly into that good night. In a game that had all the makings of a Yankees coronation, the Pirates instead delivered a 5-3 gut-punch in 10 innings, sending the Bronx faithful home frustrated and reminding everyone why baseball’s beauty lies in its refusal to follow a script.

This wasn’t supposed to happen. Gerrit Cole was magnificent, striking out 11 Pirates hitters and serving up the kind of nasty stuff that makes opposing batters look foolish. Fernando Cruz, whoever he is, got the loss after blowing up in extra innings, but that’s almost beside the point. The story here is about resilience, about a second-tier franchise refusing to fold when the almighty Yankees came calling.

Jacob Gonzalez's two-run home run (4)

Jacob Gonzalez got things rolling in the top of the fifth with a two-run blast to right field, his fourth of the season. It was a timely shot, but hardly seemed earth-shattering at the time. Then Nick Gonzales added insult to injury two innings later with a solo shot in the seventh, giving Pittsburgh a 3-0 advantage that felt substantial against Cole’s electric arm.

Enter Ben Rice and the Yankees’ cavalry. Rice crushed a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh that should have been the game-tying moment everyone would remember. It was a blast destined for the highlight reel, a reminder that the Yankees’ lineup can explode when given the opportunity. For seven innings, it seemed like that would be enough.

Extra Innings Belong to Pittsburgh

But the Pirates’ pitching held firm. Mason Montgomery and Gregory Soto combined for nothing short of brilliant relief work when it mattered most. Montgomery pitched 1.1 scoreless innings while walking one and striking out two. Soto then slammed the door in the tenth with a perfect inning, striking out one and facing the minimum. That’s the kind of execution that wins games in October, and the Pirates delivered it in July.

The tenth inning is where Wednesday’s game finally came to a crescendo. Jared Triolo lined a single to left field that scored Nick Gonzales with what would prove to be the go-ahead run. Jake Mangum followed suit with an RBI single of his own, and suddenly the Pirates had insurance they desperately needed. Pittsburgh 5, Yankees 3, final.

A Wake-Up Call for the Bronx

Look, the Yankees will play another 140-plus games this season. One loss to the Pirates in July doesn’t define a championship contender. But this loss stings because it came against a team that had no business winning this game. Cole was dominant. Rice delivered in a clutch moment. Yet baseball punished the Yankees anyway, because that’s what happens when you can’t put an opponent away despite having every advantage.

Pittsburgh leaves the Bronx with a statement win. The Pirates aren’t content to play bit parts in other people’s narratives, and on Wednesday night, they proved they can steal a game on the biggest stage. Aaron Boone will spend the offseason wondering how his team lost this one. Don Kelly will spend it celebrating a statement victory.

Gregory Soto closes out Pirates' 5-3 win

That’s baseball. Even in July.
