Vargas Walk-Off Caps Wild Diamondbacks Rally Past Athletics

There is no mercy in baseball, and the Oakland Athletics learned that lesson the hard way on Tuesday night at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks, seemingly dead in the water after Jacob Wilson tied the game with a two-run homer in the ninth, clawed back for a 6-5 victory when Ildemaro Vargas delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning. This wasn’t a game that either team deserved to win, but Arizona wanted it more when it mattered.

Max Kepler Sets Tone Early

Max Kepler's three-run homer (2)

Max Kepler launched the Diamondbacks to an early advantage with a three-run bomb in the first inning, scoring Ketel Marte and Gabriel Moreno and giving Arizona a commanding 3-0 lead before most fans had settled into their seats. It was a statement blast, the kind that should have ended this game right there. But baseball doesn’t work that way, and the Athletics proved they had plenty of fight remaining.

Ildemaro Vargas' walk-off single

The Oakland offense chipped away steadily, with Alika Williams driving in Lawrence Butler in the third to cut into the deficit. But it was the ninth inning where things truly spiraled for Arizona’s pitching staff. After Jonah Heim’s sacrifice fly in the top of the tenth had given Oakland the lead at 5-4, you could sense the panic setting in. The Athletics were one inning away from stealing a game they had no business winning.

Athletics Blow It in Extra Innings

Jacob Wilson's game-tying two-run homer (7)

Then came the collapse. Nolan Arenado tied the game with a single in the tenth, and suddenly the Diamondbacks were breathing again. This is where Vargas stepped up, and this is where Oakland’s bullpen completely surrendered. A walk-off single on a ground ball to left field. That’s it. That’s the ballgame. Arizona escapes with a victory that, frankly, they had no business getting.

Ildemaro Vargas comes up clutch with walk-off winner

Luis Medina was utterly catastrophic for the Athletics, surrendering two hits and an earned run in just one-third of an inning. Kevin Ginkel came in and did his job for Arizona, retiring the side without issue. But the real villains here were Oakland’s relief pitchers, who let this game slip through their fingers in the tenth when they had the chance to escape with a hard-fought victory.

Jonah Heim's go-ahead sac fly

Shea Langeliers provided some bright spots for Oakland with a solo home run in the eighth, keeping the Athletics’ hopes alive. Jacob Wilson also came through with his two-run blast to tie things up. But in the end, none of it mattered because Vargas delivered the dagger. The Athletics played well enough to win this game, but they didn’t play disciplined enough down the stretch. That’s the difference between winning and losing in September baseball, and it’s a lesson Oakland will need to learn quickly if they want to make any noise in the postseason race.

Ildemaro Vargas on his walk-off, mindset

The Diamondbacks are alive and well. The Athletics need to regroup and remember that extra-inning games are won by the team that doesn’t blink first. On Tuesday night, Oakland blinked.
