Raleigh’s Grand Slam Caps Mariners’ Dominant Shutout of Lifeless Reds

Sometimes a game tells you everything you need to know about two teams’ trajectories in just nine innings. Monday night at T-Mobile Park was one of those games, a complete and utter demolition of the Cincinnati Reds by a Seattle Mariners squad that looked like they were playing a different sport altogether. The final score of 8-0 doesn’t begin to capture how thoroughly outmatched Cincinnati was. This wasn’t a game. It was a coronation.

Let’s start with what should be the headline here: George Kirby was magnificent for the Mariners, posting six innings of three-hit, shutout baseball with six strikeouts and just one walk. That’s the kind of pitching performance that wins playoff series, not regular season games in July. But even more damning for the Reds was what happened on their side of the ledger. Andrew Abbott, their starter, actually pitched pretty damn well. Six innings, four hits, zero earned runs, six strikeouts. The problem? His team couldn’t score a single run to support him. Not one. Abbott was basically pitching into a void.

The Mariners’ patience paid off beautifully in the seventh inning when Abbott finally cracked. After Victor Robles scored on a Julio Rodríguez single and Weston Wilson doubled in Luke Raley, the Reds’ relief corps came unglued. That’s when Cal Raleigh stepped up and delivered the dagger, a grand slam to left-center that made it 6-0 and essentially ended whatever faint hopes Cincinnati harbored. Raleigh finished 1-for-5 with five RBIs, which feels wrong until you remember that one hit was a four-run bomb.

Here’s what should worry the Reds organization: this wasn’t just a loss. It was a statement of organizational futility. Elly De La Cruz, their young shortstop, was invisible. Spencer Steer got hit by a pitch. JJ Bleday was unable to make anything happen. The Cincinnati offense registered zero runs across nine innings against a Mariners pitching staff that, while solid, wasn’t dealing with any particular dominance until the late innings.

Victor Robles and Randy Arozarena Set the Table

The Mariners didn’t need to hit home runs all night to win this thing, though Cal Raleigh’s certainly made things easier. Victor Robles went 4-for-4, an absurd performance that speaks to Seattle’s depth. Randy Arozarena was on base constantly, scored twice, and gave the Mariners baserunners to drive in. That’s the kind of complementary offense that wins championships. Cincinnati’s inability to prevent the small ball hurt them just as much as the home runs did.

A Night to Forget for Cincinnati

Terry Francona will have to find something positive in this loss, though that’s a tall order. Abbott pitched well enough to win any reasonable ballgame, but baseball doesn’t reward moral victories. The Reds came to Seattle and got embarrassed, plain and simple. Until Cincinnati figures out how to manufacture offense against quality pitching, nights like Monday will continue to pile up in the loss column. The Mariners, meanwhile, are playing the kind of baseball that makes October reservations.
