Here’s the frustrating part for Clayton McCullough’s Marlins: they had a genuinely excellent pitching performance and it amounted to nothing. Pérez was virtually untouchable through six innings, fanning nine without allowing a baserunner. Robert Gasser also set down his batters efficiently. The Marlins did everything right until the moment it mattered most.

That’s not to diminish Ruiz’s contributions. The Marlins outfielder was their lone bright spot offensively, going 1-for-3 with that solo homer in the third. It should have been enough on a day when runs were as scarce as contact against Pérez. But baseball is ruthlessly unforgiving. One mistake, one bad pitch location, one moment of hesitation, and your entire afternoon of excellence gets erased.

Fairbanks’ Nightmare Ninth

For Fairbanks, this was nothing short of a disaster. The setup man gave up two hits and three earned runs in 0.1 innings while surrendering that walk to load the bases. That’s the kind of performance that ends up being reviewed in manager meetings, the kind of collapse that costs you ballgames you had no business losing.

The Brewers live to play another day, and the Marlins head home knowing they had this one right there for the taking. In a division chase, these are the games that haunt you come September. Miami can take solace in their pitching depth, but they won’t forget what Contreras did on this Sunday afternoon.
