Pirates Pummel Nationals in Holiday Slugfest, Lowe Delivers with Three-Run Blast

The Pittsburgh Pirates showed up to Washington on Sunday ready to celebrate Independence Day with a offensive clinic, dismantling the Nationals 11-5 at Nationals Park in a game that was never really competitive after the second inning. This wasn’t a close contest masquerading as one, folks. This was a dominant performance by a team that came to work while the home crowd watched their rotation get shredded.

Brad Lord lasted all of 1.1 innings for Washington, surrendering five earned runs on four hits before mercifully being yanked from the game. Five runs in 1.1 innings. That’s not a starting pitching performance, that’s a cry for help. The Pirates struck early and often, with Tyler Callihan’s two-run single in the second inning setting the tone for what would become a long afternoon for Nationals fans.

Bryan Reynolds added a solo shot in the third to make it 3-0, proving once again that Pittsburgh’s lineup has legitimate teeth. Reynolds may not be putting up eye-popping numbers, but he showed up on Sunday when it mattered.

Washington tried to keep pace. Luis García Jr. launched a two-run blast in the third, and Dylan Crews added another solo shot in the eighth to keep the Nationals from getting completely embarrassed. But let’s be honest, these were consolation prizes. The Nationals were chasing from the moment the game started.

The Eighth Inning Decides It

If there was a moment that buried Washington, it came in the eighth inning when Konnor Griffin delivered a go-ahead single that seemed to break whatever remaining spirit the Nationals had left. Griffin was everywhere on Sunday, making spectacular defensive plays and putting pressure on the Washington pitching staff with his presence on the basepaths. This kid is the real deal.

Then Brandon Lowe stepped up and delivered the killing blow, a three-run homer that made it 11-4 and sent the Pittsburgh faithful home happy. Lowe has 21 home runs on the season at this point, and he’s proving to be exactly the kind of middle-of-the-order enforcer a contending team needs down the stretch.

Gregory Soto Cleans Up the Mess

On the flip side, Gregory Soto got the win for Pittsburgh, which tells you everything you need to know about when the Pirates’ pitching stepped in. Soto threw 2.0 innings of relief, allowing one hit and one run while striking out two. The Pirates’ bullpen was never really tested because the game got out of hand so quickly.

Henry Davis capped off the Pirates’ scoring with a two-run single in the ninth, because apparently Pittsburgh wasn’t done making a point. The Pirates out-hit, out-powered, and out-played the Nationals on Sunday, and it showed in every facet of the game.

Henry Davis' two-run single

For Washington, this is the kind of loss that stings. You can’t let a visiting team score 11 runs at home and expect to win ballgames, period. The Nationals showed flashes of competence with their two home runs, but flashes are all they had. Pittsburgh came to Nationals Park and left no doubt about who the superior team was on this particular Sunday.
