Rockies Blast Past Marlins Behind Moniak’s Heroics at Coors

There’s a reason Coors Field has driven baseball purists to drink for decades, and Wednesday night provided Exhibit A: the Colorado Rockies absolutely demolished the Miami Marlins 6-3 in a display of power that made you wonder if the ball was stored in a humidor or a convection oven.

Give credit where it’s due, though. This wasn’t some fluke Denver elevation show. The Rockies were disciplined, focused, and relentless in their approach. Kyle Freeland was outstanding through five innings, allowing just six hits and one earned run while striking out seven. Brennan Bernardino closed it out cleanly for the save. That’s professional baseball right there.

Moniak Carries the Load

Mickey Moniak was the story of the evening, plain and simple. The Rockies’ centerfielder went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, launching a solo shot in the first inning before adding a clutch two-run triple in the fifth that essentially put the game out of reach. This is the kind of performance that separates good players from guys who show up in September when it doesn’t matter.

Hunter Goodman chipped in with a two-run blast of his own in the fifth, giving Colorado a commanding 6-2 advantage at that point. Kyle Karros added another round-tripper in the seventh just to pile on. By the time the dust settled, the Rockies had four different homers, which tells you everything about their offensive temperament on a night when the air was thin and bats were thick.

Marlins Fight but Come Up Short

Max Meyer actually pitched pretty well for Miami, surrendering just one earned run across six innings with five strikeouts. That’s a solid outing in any ballpark that isn’t sitting a mile above sea level. The problem was Meyer’s teammates couldn’t string together enough quality at-bats to support him.

Javier Sanoja provided a brief spark with a two-run triple in the fourth, and Joe Mack delivered one of the game’s most memorable moments with an inside-the-park homer in the seventh, a rarity that should’ve felt more celebratory than it did given the Marlins were already buried. By that point, Miami’s window had closed. They never threatened seriously after Goodman’s two-run shot made it 6-2.

This is what happens when you bring a solid pitching performance to Colorado in July. You need to score runs early and often, and you need your best hitters to carry the load every single night. The Marlins got some contributions from their lineup, sure, but not enough when playing in an environment where fly balls carry like they’re wearing jet packs.

The Rockies improved to yet another winning record with this result, taking advantage of their home field in the way teams should at Coors. Is this sustainable? Probably not. But on Wednesday night, with Moniak locked in and Goodman mashing, Colorado showed why elevation advantage matters. The Marlins learned that lesson the hard way.
