Eury Pérez was brilliant for Miami, cruising through 5.1 innings while allowing just two hits and striking out eight. He walked four, sure, but when your defense is making plays and your offense is batting practice on Tanner Gordon, it doesn’t matter. Pérez threw strikes when it counted and let his stuff do the talking. This is the kind of performance that reminds you why the Marlins traded for this guy in the first place.

Colorado’s Tanner Gordon, meanwhile, looked like he couldn’t find the strike zone with a GPS unit. Gordon lasted five innings, surrendering nine hits and five earned runs while recording zero walks. For a young pitcher trying to prove himself in the majors, getting shelled like this on national television isn’t exactly the resume builder he was hoping for.

Mickey Moniak’s solo home run in the first was the only bright spot for Colorado, and it felt meaningless almost immediately. By the time Jake McCarthy grounded into an out in the seventh, even the home crowd had moved on emotionally from this contest.

This wasn’t about the Rockies being bad, though they certainly didn’t play well.
