Foscue Leads the Way with Two Extra-Base Hits

The Rangers infielder ripped two doubles, driving in two crucial runs and providing the kind of consistent offensive pressure that wears down opposing pitchers. Foscue’s second double in the ninth inning, which came with runners in scoring position, effectively put this game away. Jake Burger also deserves credit for his two-hit performance. He drove in two runs on a groundout and a single, doing the dirty work that advanced runners and added to the Rangers’ total. Messick Puts Up a Fight, but It Wasn’t Enough

Parker Messick deserves some credit for staying in this game longer than many would have expected. The Guardians left-hander struck out five batters while allowing just four earned runs over 6.2 innings. That’s a respectable line against any offense, but the Rangers’ patient approach at the plate ultimately wore him down. Messick couldn’t find that dominant stuff when he needed it most, and Cleveland’s defense couldn’t bail him out either when mistakes came around.

Gabriel Arias provided Cleveland’s lone bright spot with a solo home run in the fifth inning, his third of the season. It was a line drive to center that showed what the Guardians’ third baseman is capable of on any given day. Chase DeLauter also contributed an RBI double, but two runs simply wasn’t going to cut it against a Rangers team that had methodically built its lead through the middle innings.

The Rangers’ bullpen was virtually untouchable, with Jacob Latz recording the save while allowing zero hits over two perfect innings. Robby Ahlstrom got the win in a spot appearance, mopping up one inning with a walk and nothing else to show for it. This is the kind of bullpen performance, however brief for Ahlstrom, that gives winning teams confidence.

This was Texas baseball on Monday night, plain and simple. The Rangers won because they out-executed Cleveland across nine innings, did the little things right, and didn’t beat themselves. In a division race, those wins are absolutely crucial. The Guardians will have to regroup and come back tomorrow, but tonight belongs entirely to Texas.
