Rays Power Past Diamondbacks Behind Caminero and Aranda Homers

The Tampa Bay Rays proved once again that baseball’s most predictable truth remains its most brutal: homers win ballgames. On Saturday at Tropicana Field, the Rays muscled their way past the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2 with a pair of timely two-baggers that put the game out of reach before the D-backs could mount any serious threat.

Arizona struck first, which counts for something in baseball’s theater of self-delusion. Corbin Carroll’s line drive single to right scored Geraldo Perdomo in the opening frame, giving the visitors an early 1-0 lead. But the Rays promptly responded in the bottom of the first when Junior Caminero launched a solo shot over the left field wall, tying things up immediately. Caminero’s 21st homer of the season was a no-nonsense piece of hitting that set the tone for what would become a Rays offensive showcase.

Junior Caminero's solo home run (21)

The real damage came in the fifth inning when Jonathan Aranda delivered the decisive blow, crushing a two-run homer to right-center field that gave Tampa Bay a 3-1 cushion. Aranda’s 13th long ball of the season was the kind of swing that changes momentum in a ballgame, and it did exactly that. The Diamondbacks never recovered, though they wouldn’t go quietly into that good night.

Cabrera Struggles; Grove Shines in Relief

Jose Cabrera’s afternoon was forgettable at best and detrimental at worst for Arizona. Over five innings, the D-backs starter surrendered four earned runs on seven hits while walking two. Cabrera struck out four batters but couldn’t locate consistently enough to escape the jam. Meanwhile, Michael Grove was brilliant in limited duty for the Rays, spinning 3.0 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed and four strikeouts. Grove’s efficient outing kept Arizona’s bats completely silenced when they mattered most.

The Rays added an insurance run in the sixth when Cedric Mullins delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring Victor Mesa Jr. from third base and extending Tampa Bay’s lead to 4-1. It was textbook baseball execution, the kind of small-ball precision that separates good teams from pretenders.

Marte’s Solo Shot Too Little, Too Late

Arizona’s only answer came in the eighth inning when Ketel Marte got around on a fastball and drove it to center field for a solo blast, his 14th of the season. Marte’s solo shot cut the deficit to just two runs and provided the Diamondbacks with a sliver of hope, but by then it was far too little and far too late.

Jonathan Aranda's two-run home run (13)

Bryan Baker closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, sealing the 4-2 victory for Tampa Bay. The Rays’ bullpen was effective when it mattered, and that made all the difference in a ballgame where homers determined the outcome.

This loss stings for Arizona because it never really felt like they brought their best game on Saturday. The Diamondbacks were outhit 8-4 and unable to capitalize on their early advantages. Geraldo Perdomo did his part with three hits in four at-bats, but in baseball’s cruel arithmetic, individual hits matter far less than collective power production. The Rays simply hit the ball harder and farther when the stakes were highest, and that’s really all there is to say about it.
