To their credit, the Cardinals didn’t go quietly into the night. They scored three runs in the ninth inning themselves, showing fight and resilience. Alec Burleson doubled home a run, Blaze Jordan added another with a sacrifice fly, and Jimmy Crooks delivered a clutch single. It was the kind of ninth-inning performance that would have won most games.

The problem? They were already trailing. When you blow a lead in a one-run game, you don’t get credit for scoring three runs in the next frame. You get an L in the standings.

Kyle Leahy pitched an excellent game for St. Louis, and Eduardo Rodriguez wasn’t bad for Arizona either.
