Bryson Stott delivered the dagger with a go-ahead three-run homer that turned what was shaping up as a frustrating loss into a statement win. The man finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and proved once again why he belongs in the conversation of Philadelphia’s core moving forward. Edmundo Sosa was the real narrative thread here though, driving in five runs while collecting two hits, including a double in that explosive ninth. His five RBIs and two-run homer in the fifth inning made him the most dangerous player on the field by night’s end.

J.T. Realmuto’s bases-clearing double in the eighth kept things moving, while Brandon Marsh and Trea Turner added their own ninth-inning heroics. This wasn’t elegant baseball. This was a slugfest masquerading as a game. But when you’re winning 14-9 on the road, you don’t apologize for the method.

Washington’s Young Lineup Showed Fight, Just Not Enough

Credit where it’s due: the Nationals’ kids showed some steel in the fourth and eighth innings. Nasim Nuñez and José Tena combined for four hits and four RBIs early on, while Jorbit Vivas blasted a three-run shot in the eighth to briefly give Washington the upper hand. Luis García Jr. added a late solo homer in the ninth to make it marginally respectable on the scoresheet.

The problem with the Nationals is something deeper than one game, one bullpen meltdown, or one late-inning collapse. They came out swinging against Phillies pitching and made things uncomfortable. But when real teams flex in the late innings, Washington flinches. Orion Kerkeling only needed 1.0 inning of work to earn the win because the Phillies’ offense finally remembered it was Tuesday night and they were supposed to win baseball games.

This was an ugly, entertaining, thoroughly professional victory for Philadelphia. The Phillies won a game they probably should have won more decisively, and they did it by overwhelming a Washington team that simply doesn’t have enough weaponry to hang with them when push comes to shove. Stott’s homer will be replayed a thousand times, but it’s worth remembering this win belonged to an entire lineup that refused to quit.
