Rangers Survive Padres’ Slugfest in Explosive First Inning Shootout

Friday night at Globe Life Field turned into an old-fashioned slugfest, and while the San Diego Padres swung mightily, the Texas Rangers simply swung slightly harder. The Rangers held on for a 9-7 victory over a Padres team that brought legitimate thunder to Arlington but ultimately came up two runs short.

Let’s talk about that first inning because it was absolutely bonkers. The Padres scored five runs in the top of the first, capped off by Ty France‘s grand slam that looked like he was trying to launch it into the parking lot. France finished the evening with two homers and five RBIs, proving once again why he’s one of the most dangerous bats in the National League. Gavin Sheets added an RBI single to set the table, and suddenly the Padres looked like they were going to cruise.

Except the Rangers had different ideas. If the Padres came to play baseball, the Rangers came to play volleyball with a baseball. Six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Six! Brandon Nimmo doubled, Alejandro Osuna went yard with a two-run double, and Jake Burger’s line drive double made it look like the Rangers had studied film on every Padres pitcher for three weeks straight. Elias Diaz capped it off with an RBI single. By the time the dust settled on the first frame, we were tied at 5-5 and everyone in the ballpark knew we were in for a fight.

Jacob deGrom, making his fourth start for Texas, looked shaky early but found his rhythm. He went six innings, giving up six runs on six hits while striking out nine. That’s the Jekyll and Hyde performance you get when your ace starts off looking like he just woke up from a nap but remembers midway through that he’s, you know, Jacob deGrom. He gave up France’s second solo shot in the fourth, but otherwise kept the Padres’ hitters honest with that ridiculous fastball command he’s always possessed.

Randy Vasquez, meanwhile, was a disaster. Just 3.1 innings pitched, six earned runs, and the walks piling up like traffic on I-35. The Padres needed a performance from their starting pitcher on Friday night, and they simply didn’t get it. That’s on Vasquez and nobody else.

Langford’s Heroics Lift Rangers Down the Stretch

Wyatt Langford was the difference maker for Texas, going 3-for-5 with a double, a solo homer in the eighth, and two RBIs. The kid is playing like someone who belongs in this lineup, and his eighth-inning blast gave the Rangers insurance they desperately needed.

Gavin Sheets hit a solo shot in the eighth for San Diego to keep things interesting, but it was too little, too late. Jacob Latz closed it out with a 1.3-inning save, holding the Padres scoreless in their final at-bat.

Padres Leave Too Many Runs on the Table

Here’s the thing about Friday night: the Padres had every opportunity to win this game. They had a 5-0 lead, they had Ty France hitting like a man possessed, and they had chances late. But baseball isn’t about what should have happened. It’s about what did happen, and what happened was the Rangers scored nine runs and the Padres scored seven. Sometimes the better team wins. Sometimes the team that swings better in the first inning wins. Friday, those were one and the same.
