Carpenter’s clutch double lifts Tigers past White Sox in Comerica thriller

The Detroit Tigers scraped together just enough offense to survive a scrappy Friday night battle with the Chicago White Sox, stealing a 4-3 victory at Comerica Park behind some timely hitting and a dominant pitching performance from Tarik Skubal. This wasn’t pretty. This wasn’t a showcase of offensive brilliance. But it was a win, and in June, wins are what matter.

The White Sox came out swinging early, with Randal Grichuk belting a solo shot to left field in the opening frame to stake Chicago to an early 1-0 lead. It looked like it might be one of those nights where the visitors set the tone. Instead, the Tigers answered immediately with their own brand of small ball. Matt Vierling‘s two-run homer to center field in the bottom of the first, with Dillon Dingler aboard, flipped the script entirely. The Tigers took a 2-1 advantage before the game was barely five minutes old.

What followed was a defensive showcase that would’ve been more compelling if the offenses had cooperated. The White Sox chipped away methodically. After Chicago challenged a play at first base in the fifth inning and successfully overturned the call, Tristan Peters’ resulting forceout plated Sam Antonacci to make it 2-2. Then Junior Perez, making what appeared to be his first career home run count by lining one into left-center in the sixth, gave the South Siders a 3-2 lead. Fresh blood is supposed to help, and Perez’s two-bagger certainly seemed to suggest Chicago had found something.

But Kerry Carpenter, that quiet destroyer in the Tigers lineup, had other plans. His doubled to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring both Dillon Dingler and Riley Greene, proved to be the dagger. It was the kind of at-bat that separates winners from also-rans. Two outs. Two runners in scoring position. Carpenter didn’t flinch. The Tigers took a 4-3 lead, and that turned out to be the final margin.

Skubal’s dominance sets tone despite bullpen dramatics

Tarik Skubal was the story here, really. Eight strikeouts through his innings pitched, forcing weak contact and inducing swings in the dirt with the kind of authority that reminds you why this kid is the ace of this staff. Erick Fedde, meanwhile, lasted just 4.2 innings for Chicago, giving up four hits and two earned runs while striking out four. It wasn’t a disaster, but it was enough. Drew Anderson picked up the win with 1.1 scoreless innings, and Kenley Jansen, still capable of being trusted in high-leverage spots, recorded the save with his characteristic efficiency.

Defense keeps the fireworks contained

Both teams played solid defense throughout. Tristan Peters made a diving catch for the White Sox. Hao-Yu Lee ranged far to his right for an over-the-shoulder grab. Matt Vierling made a leaping catch in center. The Tigers’ defense was equally sharp, with Colt Keith making a nice play at third to gun down Peters attempting to score. It was the kind of game where the margin for error was razor thin, and whichever team made fewer mistakes would win.

Carpenter's double, Skubal lead Tigers' 4-3 win

In the end, Detroit made fewer mistakes when it mattered most. That’s baseball in June. Carpenter’s clutch double will be forgotten by Tuesday if the Tigers don’t keep winning. But right now, it’s a victory the Tigers desperately needed.
