Rockies Silence Wrigleyville: Colorado’s Timely Hitting Stuns Cubs

The Colorado Rockies walked into Wrigley Field on Tuesday and reminded the Chicago Cubs that baseball isn’t won in the first inning, no matter how picturesque the ballpark or how electric the home crowd. A clean, efficient offensive performance by the visitors, combined with some genuinely shaky pitching by Cubs starter Edward Cabrera, resulted in a 5-2 Colorado victory that should serve as a reality check for a team that’s been making far too many excuses in June.

Pete Crow-Armstrong gave the Cubs exactly what they needed early, launching a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first to put Chicago on the board immediately. It was the kind of spark that gets the Wrigley faithful on their feet and theoretically sets the tone for the afternoon. Instead, it only delayed the inevitable. The Rockies, showing the kind of purposeful baseball that separates winners from pretenders, systematically dismantled Cabrera over the next four innings.

TJ Rumfield's two-run home run (10)

The turning point came in the top of the fourth, when Willi Castro ripped a sharp line drive double to center field, scoring Jake McCarthy. Two batters later, TJ Rumfield put the game on ice with a two-run bomb to right-center, a no-doubt-about-it shot that made it 3-1 Rockies. That’s the difference right there: when Colorado got runners in scoring position, they delivered. The Cubs, conversely, squandered opportunity after opportunity.

Cabrera’s final line tells the story of a pitcher who simply didn’t have it. Four and one-third innings, five earned runs on three hits and two walks. That’s not a performance that loses you ballgames in the major leagues, that’s a performance that gets you a stern conversation with your pitching coach and a trip to the bullpen earlier than anyone anticipated. The Cubs’ front office might want to take a long look at what they’re getting from their rotation, because this kind of inconsistency will absolutely come back to haunt them in September.

On the flip side, Blas Castaño and Jaden Hill combined to shut down a Cubs lineup that simply couldn’t capitalize on their early momentum. Hill picked up his first career save in this one, and while his numbers look pristine (one inning, zero hits, zero runs), there’s something to be said for a young reliever coming in during a crucial stretch and throwing up a zero. That’s composure. That’s confidence.

Castro’s Consistency Was the Real Story

While Rumfield’s home run gets the highlight reel treatment, don’t sleep on Willi Castro’s performance. Three hits in five at-bats, including that crucial double and an RBI groundout in the fifth that extended the lead to 4-1. Castro has become exactly the kind of table-setter that Colorado needs in order to compete in the National League West. His aggression at the plate and baserunning awareness were on full display Tuesday.

Cubs Leave Too Much on the Table

Craig Counsell’s Cubs had opportunities. They got runners in position and couldn’t push runs across consistently enough. That’s the definition of a wasted afternoon in baseball. You don’t beat quality opponents like Colorado by scoring two runs and hoping the other team messes up more than you do. Tuesday was a chance for the Cubs to make a statement and instead they made excuses. The Rockies, meanwhile, took what they were given and punished the Cubs for their incompetence.
