The young pitcher understood the assignment and executed it without fanfare or drama. That’s what a quality starting pitcher does when the game is on the line, and Cantillo understood the moment.

Cade Smith came in for the save situation in the ninth and didn’t blink. 1.1 innings of shutout baseball, two strikeouts, and one walk. The Tigers’ bats were silent when they needed them most. Travis Bazzana got to third with some aggressive baserunning and nearly scored on a throwing error, but Cleveland’s defense held firm enough. That’s playoff baseball wrapped up in a single Saturday afternoon tune-up.

Skubal’s Return Underachieved Despite Effort

Here’s the uncomfortable truth about Skubal’s return: he was fine, but not special. Four strikeouts is respectable. Allowing just one earned run in 4.2 innings isn’t a disaster. But when you’re tasked with carrying a team’s pitching staff and holding a fragile lead, fine isn’t enough. Fine is forgettable. Skubal himself seemed to understand this based on his postgame comments, essentially putting the loss on himself.

The Tigers couldn’t generate anything resembling consistent offense. One run in a full game is what you get when your lineup lacks rhythm and your opportunities get squandered. A.J. Hinch will tell you his team left plays on the field, and he’d be right.

The injury report, however, looms large. José Ramírez exiting with a hamate fracture is a concerning development for Cleveland, even in victory. Chase DeLauter’s rib injury for Detroit adds to an already mounting parade of IL stints for both clubs. Saturday’s game may have produced one winner on the scoreboard, but both teams may have lost something far more valuable on the field.

This was a game decided by a single swing, pitching discipline, and Cleveland’s ability to hold on. Nothing fancy, nothing elaborate. Just baseball at its most essential.
