Pirates Edge Marlins in Sloppy Saturday Affair at PNC Park

Sometimes baseball rewards the team that makes fewer mistakes, not necessarily the team that plays the prettiest game. On Saturday at PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates scraped together a 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins in an absolutely bewildering contest that featured more relief appearances than a medical convention and enough challenges to make you question whether instant replay actually clarifies anything.

This was the kind of game that makes you wonder if both teams were running on fumes after a brutal stretch. The Pirates scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first when Ryan O’Hearn singled to bring home Spencer Horwitz, a straightforward affair that suggested this might be a conventional low-scoring affair. It wasn’t. What followed was a chaotic parade of pitchers, challenges, and opportunistic at-bats that somehow produced only five runs across nine innings.

Bryan Reynolds' RBI double

The Marlins answered back in the third inning when Liam Hicks lined a single to left that scored Jakob Marsee, tying the game at 1-1. But Bryan Reynolds, that magnificent pirate, immediately answered with a double in the bottom half that scored Horwitz and put Pittsburgh back on top 2-1. Reynolds was the story here. The man came through when it mattered, delivering the kind of clutch hits that separate winners from pretenders in June.

The Marlins got one run back in the sixth inning through Heriberto Hernández’s single, which scored Xavier Edwards and tied things up at 2-2. At this point, the game had devolved into pure chaos, with both teams struggling to manufacture anything resembling consistent offense. Bender’s line for Miami, just one inning of work with two hits and a run, tells you everything you need to know about how ugly this got.

Late Drama Decides It All

The eighth inning is where this absurdity finally reached a crescendo. Spencer Horwitz, who had been plunked earlier in the game, got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which sounds almost too ridiculous to be true, but there it is. That forced run made it 3-2 Pirates, and unlike the Marlins’ various attempts to tie or take the lead, this one held up.

Gregory Soto came in for the save situation and, mercifully for everyone involved, got through the ninth inning without incident. One inning of work, one hit, one strikeout. The man was economical and efficient. For a game that featured more moving parts than a Swiss watch factory, that ninth inning felt positively serene.

Questions Linger

The bigger picture here is concerning for Miami. Anthony Bender lasted just one inning and surrendered his run. The Marlins’ inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities was maddening. They had chances throughout but couldn’t convert. Pittsburgh, for all its sloppiness, found a way to push across one more run than Miami in the spots that mattered.

Yohan Ramírez earned the win despite throwing just one inning. That’s baseball in 2026, apparently. The Pirates improved to their record with late-inning grit and a willingness to take what the Marlins would give them. It wasn’t beautiful, but it was effective. Sometimes that’s enough.
