This wasn’t some sloppy, error-filled affair where one team simply outmuscled the other. No, this was baseball executed with surgical precision by a Marlins squad that’s clearly found its rhythm at precisely the right moment in the season. Phillips was the architect of Miami’s dominance, striking out five batters over his five innings of work while surrendering just two hits and two walks. The kid was untouchable, painting corners and working ahead in counts like he’d been doing this for a decade instead of whatever stage he’s actually at in his career.

Marlins Make the Most of Their Chances

To Arizona’s credit, Merrill Kelly wasn’t exactly getting shelled out there. The D-backs starter worked six innings of quality baseball, scattering four hits while walking two and striking out one. The Diamondbacks’ offense never found a rhythm against Phillips and the Marlins’ bullpen. Pete Fairbanks came in for the final inning and looked as sharp as anyone on the field all night, striking out two while cruising through a 1-2-3 ninth. Corbin Carroll, Arizona’s star right fielder, went down looking to Phillips in a key at-bat, which just about summed up the night for the visitors.

Make no mistake: this was a complete team performance by Miami. Defensively, they were sound. Offensively, they were precise. On the mound, they were dominant.
