Chisholm Jr. Carries the Load

If Rodón was the steadying hand, Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the dagger. The Yankees infielder went 1-for-4 but it’s insulting to reduce his performance to those numbers. His two-run triple in the second inning off Parker Messick screamed of intent, a sharp line drive to right that immediately shifted momentum in New York’s favor. By night’s end, Chisholm Jr. had driven in three runs, the kind of clutch offensive performance that wins games in tight divisions.

José Caballero also deserves credit for a largely anonymous yet effective evening. Two sacrifice flies and a run-scoring single gave the Yankees multiple ways to plate runners, the kind of small-ball execution that separates contenders from pretenders. Caballero didn’t post gaudy numbers, but he made every at-bat matter.

Guardians Never Found Their Footing

Cleveland’s lineup, led by a solo home run from Angel Martínez, never truly threatened. Yes, Austin Hedges collected two doubles and drove in two runs, and yes, the Guardians scored four times, but it always felt reactive rather than aggressive. They were chasing the game from the opening pitch when Martínez’s solo shot made it 1-0, and by the time the Yankees’ second-inning explosion occurred, the deficit was simply too much to overcome.

Parker Messick lasted just 5.2 innings for Cleveland, allowing four earned runs on five hits. The Guardians’ starting rotation has been a point of concern all season, and this performance did nothing to alleviate those worries. When your starter can’t pitch deep into games, you’re asking your bullpen to bail you out, and that’s a losing proposition in June when fresh arms are already being taxed.

Anthony Volpe’s RBI double in the sixth inning essentially put this game away, and Paul Goldschmidt’s subsequent single added another dagger. The Yankees’ lineup is constructed to punish mistakes, and Messick made several.

This game was never particularly dramatic or memorable in isolation, but that’s precisely what makes it valuable for a Yankees team trying to stake a claim in the AL East.
