Nationals Obliterate Diamondbacks 14-1 Behind García’s Two-Homer Rampage

Sometimes a baseball game isn’t really a game at all. It’s an execution. It’s a statement. And on Friday night at Chase Field, the Washington Nationals turned what should have been a competitive matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks into an absolute beatdown, winning 14-1 in a performance so dominant it bordered on mean-spirited.

Foster Griffin was brilliant, but frankly, he could have thrown underhand and still gotten a decision. The Nationals came out swinging like they had a personal vendetta against Merrill Kelly, and by the end of five innings, Kelly was done, credited with the loss after surrendering seven earned runs on six hits. This wasn’t Kelly’s night. This wasn’t the Nationals’ night either. This was the Nationals’ entire week compressed into nine innings.

Luis García Jr. leads Nationals' home run bash in win

Luis García Jr. was the undisputed star of this clinic, and I’m not sure that’s even doing him justice. Two home runs, including a grand slam in the sixth inning, six RBIs total. That’s not a box score line, that’s a fever dream. The two-run shot in the first set the tone immediately, signaling to everyone watching that the Nationals weren’t in a joking mood. Then came the grand slam in the sixth, which essentially put this game in a coma.

But García wasn’t alone in this offensive explosion. James Wood went deep with a 419-foot missile to center field. CJ Abrams added his own solo shot. Daylen Lile homered as well. This wasn’t a few guys getting hot. This was an entire batting order punishing a pitcher for the cardinal sin of not having his stuff on Friday night.

A Complete Team Effort That Felt Almost Unsportsman-like

What made this even more impressive was that the Nationals didn’t need three-run homers to feel it. They manufactured runs through doubles (Jorbit Vivas‘ sharp line drive in the third), singles (Daylen Lile’s line drive), and even a hit-by-pitch. This was sophisticated offensive baseball layered on top of raw power, and the Diamondbacks had no answer for any of it.

Aramis Garcia's first home run since 2022

Aramis García hit a solo homer for Arizona in the third inning, a small consolation prize in what became the most lopsided affair of this early June evening. That single run would be all the Diamondbacks could muster against a Nationals team that looked like they were playing a different sport entirely.

Griffin Delivers When It Matters Most

Foster Griffin deserves credit for his efficiency and control. Five innings, two hits, one earned run, zero walks, four strikeouts. He didn’t need to be flashy because he was facing a team that was so locked in offensively that his job was simply to not lose it for them. Mission accomplished. The bullpen cleaned up from there, preserving what had already become a laugher.

Foster Griffin strikes out the side in the 4th

This is the kind of game that gets remembered not for competitive merit but for sheer dominance. The Nationals came to Arizona and served notice that they’re a force to be reckoned with in 2026. The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, will want to forget this one happened. On a Friday night in June, Washington reminded everyone why you don’t take a day off against a fully engaged opponent.
