Pirates Pound Twins Behind Ashcraft’s 11 K’s, Lee’s Two-Homer Consolation

The Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t just beat the Minnesota Twins on Sunday at PNC Park. They manhandled them, flexed on them, and sent them packing with their tails between their legs in a 9-3 drubbing that was never remotely close after the second inning. This was the kind of performance that makes you wonder what the Twins thought they were walking into when they took the field, because the Pirates came out swinging like they had a personal vendetta.

Ashcraft’s Strikeout Clinic Dominates

Braxton Ashcraft was absolutely unconscionable on the mound. Six innings, five hits, just two earned runs, and a stunning 11 strikeouts with zero walks. That’s the kind of pitching line that makes opposing hitters want to take up golf. Ashcraft clearly owned the Twins’ lineup, treating PNC Park like it was his personal laboratory for strikeout experimentation. Every time Minnesota looked like they might mount something resembling a threat, Ashcraft would blow a fastball by them and extinguish the spark before it could ignite.

The Pirates scored early and often, which is what Ashcraft needed because it meant he could pitch with confidence and aggression. Ashcraft got the win, and he earned every bit of it.

Pirates’ Explosive Early Offense Buries Twins

Pittsburgh’s offense was an onslaught. Ryan O'Hearn opened the scoring with a solo shot in the second inning, and from there it just got uglier for Minnesota. Jared Triolo’s RBI single followed, then Nick Gonzales stepped up and cranked his first home run of the season, a two-run job that extended the lead to 4-0 faster than you could say “mercy rule.”

The fifth inning is where the Pirates essentially closed the book on this one. Brandon Lowe singled in a run, O’Neil Cruz drew a walk that scored another, Jake Mangum’s sacrifice fly plated another, and Henry Davis capped the barrage with a two-run single. By the time the dust settled, Pittsburgh had poured six runs across in that inning alone. It was methodical, relentless, and thoroughly demoralizing.

Zebby Matthews was brutal for Minnesota, giving up seven earned runs on six hits in just 4.1 innings. That’s not the recipe for success in any universe, and it certainly wasn’t going to cut it against a Pirates team that was clearly locked in on Sunday.

Lee’s Heroics Come Too Late

Brooks Lee was the lone bright spot for the Twins, launching two home runs and driving in three runs. It was a solid individual performance, but it amounted to rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Lee’s two-run shot in the sixth and solo homer in the ninth were nice consolation prizes, but they did nothing to mask the fundamental inadequacy of Minnesota’s pitching and overall offensive performance. When your starter is getting shelled and the opposing ace is throwing a clinic, one guy hitting a couple homers doesn’t move the needle.

This was a thoroughly disappointing outing for the Twins on Sunday. The Pirates came to play, and Minnesota simply didn’t show up with the same intensity. That’s the ballgame right there.
