Vargas Walks It Off: White Sox Stun Tigers in 10th Inning Thriller

Miguel Vargas just broke Detroit’s heart on Friday night, and honestly, the Tigers have no one to blame but themselves. The Chicago White Sox scraped together a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers in 10 innings at Rate Field, with Vargas providing the dagger with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th that will haunt Tigers manager A.J. Hinch for weeks.

This wasn’t supposed to happen. Detroit had every opportunity to put this game away early. Dillon Dingler muscled up in the third inning and deposited a two-run bomb to left-center field, giving the Tigers an early 2-0 lead and what appeared to be a stranglehold on the contest. For a moment, it looked like a routine Friday night road victory.

Then the White Sox started chipping away like they had nothing to lose. Vargas doubled down the line in the third to plate a run, and suddenly momentum was shifting. The game tightened, and Detroit’s pitching staff couldn’t hold firm when it mattered most.

Extras Expose Detroit’s Fragility

The ninth inning is where things got genuinely bizarre. Rikuu Nishida laid down a sacrifice bunt that should have been routine, but Spencer Torkelson committed a throwing error on the play, allowing Andrew Benintendi to score and knotting the game at 3-3. It was the kind of mental lapse that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet but absolutely shows up in the loss column.

Zack Short had his own opportunity in the 10th, lifting a sacrifice fly to right field that pushed Matt Vierling across and appeared to give Detroit the lead they desperately needed. For about 15 minutes, the Tigers looked like they’d escaped with a gritty road win.

Then Vargas stepped into the box with Drew Romo on base, and it was over. The White Sox third baseman launched a walk-off blast to left-center field, sending the home crowd into delirium and sending the Tigers back to Detroit with yet another loss they’ll spend all weekend kicking themselves about.

What We Learned Friday Night

Bryan Hudson got the win despite pitching just one inning, which tells you everything about how this game unfolded. Drew Anderson got torched early and left in a precarious position. Detroit’s bullpen had to execute in high-leverage situations, and they didn’t get it done when it counted.

Miguel Vargas hits a walk-off homer in White Sox win

Vargas was the story of this game, going 2-for-5 with a homer, a double, and 3 RBIs. He was the only hitter who consistently made quality contact when the Tigers needed him not to. Meanwhile, Dingler’s early power display proved to be nothing more than a false promise.

Condensed Game: DET@CWS – 5/29/26

This is a momentum killer for Detroit. You don’t lose games like this on the road and suddenly turn it around. The Tigers had the chance to steal one in Chicago, and instead they’re heading home empty-handed with a bad taste in their mouths. Torkelson’s error will sting long after Friday’s final pitch is thrown.

The White Sox won’t care how ugly it looked. They got the W, and Vargas made sure they’ll remember exactly who delivered it.
