Pirates Demolish Cubs 12-1 Behind Ashcraft, Valdez’s Power

The Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t just beat the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night at PNC Park. They obliterated them, putting on a clinic in offensive efficiency and pitching dominance that left Craig Counsell’s squad looking lost. The final score of 12-1 feels almost charitable to a Cubs team that came into this matchup clearly unprepared for what was coming.

A First Inning Disaster

Jordan Wicks never stood a chance. The Cubs starter got absolutely shelled in the bottom of the first inning, watching helplessly as the Pirates staked themselves to a 5-0 lead before most fans had settled into their seats. Bryan Reynolds sparked the onslaught with a two-run double to left field, and just like that, the game was over. Sure, there were six more innings to play, but everyone in the stadium knew what was coming.

Oneil Cruz added an RBI single to make it worse, and then Esmerlyn Valdez delivered the dagger with a two-run homer that sent the PNC Park faithful into a frenzy. Wicks was pulled after just 4.1 innings and 8 earned runs, his night mercifully abbreviated by a Cubs team that at least recognized futility when they saw it.

The Cubs scratched across their only run in the second when Ian Happ drove in Alex Bregman, but that was essentially theater. A single run in response to Pittsburgh’s offensive barrage amounted to surrender before the white flag was even raised.

Ashcraft in Command

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Braxton Ashcraft was surgical. The Pirates starter gave Pittsburgh everything they needed, scattering 7 hits across 6.1 innings while allowing just 1 run and striking out 5. This is what it looks like when a pitcher takes full advantage of run support. Ashcraft didn’t need to be perfect. He just needed to be competent, and he was far better than that.

The Pirates kept piling on, adding runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Spencer Horwitz went deep for a solo shot in the seventh, his second hit of the game. Nick Gonzales, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI, continued Pittsburgh’s relentless attack. By the time the eighth inning rolled around, Dennis Santana was already warming up for what would amount to a save situation in a blowout.

Valdez finished his evening with a 2-for-4 line, his homer and three RBIs leading a Pittsburgh offense that looked like it had finally found its rhythm. This wasn’t a team playing; it was a team executing against overmatched competition. Oneil Cruz, perfect at the plate with 3-for-3, embodied Pittsburgh’s precision.

The Cubs are now in freefall, losers of their tenth consecutive game according to reports filtering out of the PNC Park broadcast booth. Counsell’s eventual ejection in the ninth inning served as the perfect punctuation mark on an evening that should have been cancelled for his team’s sake. This wasn’t baseball. It was a public execution disguised as a ballgame. Pittsburgh simply showed up, and Chicago simply didn’t show up at all. That’s the difference between a team that’s rising and one that’s sinking fast.
