Marlins Pummel Blue Jays Behind Junk’s Steady Hand

The Miami Marlins came to Rogers Centre on Monday and did what too many teams fail to do against mediocre pitching: they capitalized relentlessly. The result was an 8-2 drubbing of the Toronto Blue Jays that exposed everything wrong with Trey Yesavage‘s outing and everything right about a Marlins lineup that refuses to beat itself.

Otto Lopez got Miami started in the opening frame with a sacrifice fly that scored Xavier Edwards, a quiet way to put the first run on the board. But this wasn’t going to be a 1-0 slugfest. No, the Marlins understood that Monday’s matchup called for consistent, intelligent pressure, and that’s precisely what they applied.

Yesavage Crumbles in the Middle Innings

Owen Caissie's RBI double

Trey Yesavage looked competent early, striking out six Marlins over his tenure on the mound. The strikeouts were nice window dressing, but they masked a fundamental problem: he couldn’t escape jams. By the fifth inning, Owen Caissie’s sharp line-drive double to center had brought home Javier Sanoja to make it 2-0. Yesavage was beginning to unravel, though not catastrophically yet.

Javier Sanoja's two-run double

Then came the sixth inning, and it was here that Yesavage’s day went from bad to genuinely ugly. Kyle Stowers doubled to left to score Liam Hicks, and immediately after, Javier Sanoja lined one down the left field line for a two-run double that made it 5-0. Suddenly, the Marlins had broken the game wide open, and Toronto’s pitching staff looked helpless. Ernie Clement‘s solo homer in the bottom of the sixth provided brief hope for Blue Jays fans, but it was merely a consolation prize at that point.

Stowers and Company Pile It On

Kyle Stowers' RBI double

The eighth inning represented the final indignity for Toronto. Kyle Stowers struck again with his second double of the evening, scoring Hicks once more. Jakob Marsee followed with a productive groundout, Otto Lopez scored, and Owen Caissie capped the rally with a timely single to left that brought home Sanoja. It was 8-1 by the time the dust settled, and the game had devolved into garbage time execution.

Kyle Stowers' second RBI double of the game

On the Miami side, Janson Junk received the win despite only pitching five innings. His line was vintage efficient pitching: five hits, one earned run, zero walks, three strikeouts. He didn’t blow anyone away, but he didn’t need to. Give a pitcher a 5-0 lead before the sixth inning and suddenly three strikeouts looks like a masterpiece.

Trey Yesavage's six strikeouts vs. Marlins

What struck observers most about this contest was Miami’s willingness to take what the defense gave them. They didn’t chase. They didn’t beat themselves. Caissie finished with two RBIs, Sanoja with two as well, and Stowers contributed on multiple occasions. This is organized baseball, the kind that puts teams in position to compete down the stretch.

Caissie, Sanoja, Stowers lead Marlins in 8-2 win

For Toronto, Monday was simply a day to forget. Yesavage allowed five earned runs over six and two-thirds innings. The offense managed eight hits but could only convert one into a meaningful score. Nathan Lukes had himself a solid night at the plate with three hits in four at-bats, but offensive excellence at one position means nothing when the team loses 8-2.

Condensed Game: MIA@TOR – 5/25/26

The Marlins head out of Toronto having reminded baseball that talent without execution means nothing. That’s a lesson the Blue Jays may need to relearn several more times before this season concludes.
