Walker’s Two-Homer Masterclass Silences Cubs as Teng Dominates

Christian Walker didn’t just beat the Cubs on Saturday at Wrigley Field. He embarrassed them. The Astros third baseman went 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs in a 3-0 Houston victory that was never remotely competitive, and frankly, shouldn’t have taken the full nine innings to play out.

This was supposed to be a battle between two respectable teams in late May. Instead, the Cubs came out looking like a minor league squad facing a AAA affiliate. Walker’s first blast came in the opening inning, a two-run shot to left-center that immediately signaled this was going to be a long afternoon for Cubs starter Colin Rea. The second dagger came two innings later, another line drive to the same field. Perfect. Efficient. Demoralizing.

Teng’s Scoreless Gem Sets the Tone

But here’s the thing about Saturday’s result that really stings for Chicago: the Astros could’ve won this game 1-0 on any given day. Kai-Wei Teng was absolutely magnificent, pitching six innings of two-hit baseball with zero earned runs. Six strikeouts. Three walks, sure, but when your command is that sharp and your stuff is that overpowering, a few free passes are irrelevant. The Cubs swung and missed repeatedly against Teng. They looked uncomfortable. They looked lost.

Colin Rea actually wasn’t terrible for the Cubs. Seven innings, three earned runs, four strikeouts. In most games, that’s a serviceable outing. But serviceable doesn’t matter when your defense can’t generate any runs and your opponent’s pitcher is dealing like he’s in the middle of a no-hitter. The Cubs had their defensive moments, sure. Pete Crow-Armstrong made some highlight-reel catches, and Nico Hoerner’s between-the-legs play was vintage Cubs small-ball fun. None of it mattered.

The Injury Clouds a Perfect Day for Houston

The only damper on Houston’s dominance was Yordan Alvarez exiting the game with back spasms. That’s concerning. In a 3-0 game where the Astros were already cruising, watching their superstar limp off the field is the kind of thing that keeps you up at night. You don’t want to overreact to in-game injuries, but you also don’t want to pretend they don’t matter. Houston needs Alvarez healthy down the stretch.

Bryan King closed it out with a clean ninth inning, earning the save in what was essentially a mop-up situation after the first inning concluded. This is what happens when one team shows up ready to play baseball and the other team shows up to go through the motions.

For the Cubs, Saturday was a complete loss. Not just in terms of the scoreboard, but in terms of being competitive. Walker’s performance, Teng’s dominant pitching, and the Astros’ clinical approach to winning is exactly the kind of baseball that wins in October. Meanwhile, Chicago looked like they’re still trying to figure out who they are. That’s a problem. That’s not a one-game problem either.
