Walker Delivers in Clutch as Cardinals Edge Athletics in Wild Thriller

Jordan Walker is the kind of player who makes you forget about all the nonsense surrounding modern baseball, and on Thursday night at Sutter Health Park, he reminded everyone in Oakland why the St. Louis Cardinals are built to win close games. Walker went 2-for-5 with a homer, a double, and 2 RBIs in a 5-4 Cardinals victory that should serve as a referendum on clutch hitting in an age where too many teams fold when the pressure mounts.

Let’s be honest: this game was an absolute mess. Twelve ABS challenges. Twelve. The strike zone looked like it was written in disappearing ink, with umpires and the automated system apparently playing Calvinball out there. At one point, a ball got overturned to a strike. Then another ball became a strike. Then strikes became balls. It was the kind of game that makes you wonder if we’ve solved a problem or created a bigger headache, but that’s a conversation for another time.

A’s Jump Out Early, Can’t Finish

Nick Kurtz hammers 442-foot home run

The Athletics came out swinging, with Nick Kurtz launching a mammoth 442-foot solo shot in the first inning that should have set the tone for an Oakland victory. Kurtz was the real deal all night, finishing 2-for-3 with two hits and the early momentum. But momentum in baseball is a cruel mistress, and Oakland couldn’t capitalize on their early advantage.

Jordan Walker's solo home run (12)

Walker answered with a solo homer in the fifth, and suddenly the Cardinals had life. Then came the sixth inning, where Victor Scott II added another solo shot, and the St. Louis lineup started looking like it had woken up from a nap. Nolan Gorman’s RBI single pushed across another run, and just like that, the Cardinals had taken a 3-1 lead.

Shea Langeliers' two-run single

Oakland fought back in the seventh. Zack Gelof‘s solo homer cut it to 3-2, and then Shea Langeliers, who was absolutely locked in at the plate with three hits, delivered a clutch two-run single that put the A’s back on top 4-3. For a moment, it looked like Oakland might close this thing out.

Cardinals Refuse to Quit

Jordan Walker's go-ahead RBI double

But the Cardinals showed the kind of intestinal fortitude that separates winners from also-rans. In the ninth inning, with the season hanging in the balance, Ivan Herrera laced a single to score Thomas Saggese and tie the game. Then Walker, because apparently he was determined to have the final word, doubled to right-center to score JJ Wetherholt with the go-ahead run.

Condensed Game: STL@ATH – 5/14/26

Matt Svanson picked up the win with a clean inning of work, and Riley O'Brien, pitching with the precision of a surgeon, recorded his 13th save by shutting the door in the ninth. The Cardinals’ bullpen proved to be the difference when it mattered most.

This was a game that could have gone either way, a snapshot of baseball’s beautiful brutality. The Athletics played well enough to win. The Cardinals simply wanted it more when it counted. That’s championship baseball, and if the Cardinals keep playing with this kind of resolve, they’ll be playing in October when the real games begin.
